Back in high school I had a friend who held a bonfire the first week of every October. She lived a couple miles out of town in what we called the boonies- middle of nowhere surrounded by corn and soy bean fields. There were fields to the side of and in front of her house and woods in her backyard. It was a great place to have bonfires. At night when we were gathered around the fire we told scary stories to creep each other out. Many of the stories told were true accounts of things we had experienced. I would like to share one of the best stories told around that bonfire. It’s been a few years since I first heard this story so some of the details are a little foggy. In the retelling I will refer to my friend who held the bonfires as Lauren.
Before I begin you should know that Lauren’s family lived on a couple acres of land, her grandma lived in the farmhouse to the right of their property, and Lauren’s friend Judy (also not actual name) lived on the property to the right of Lauren’s grandma.
Lauren began by saying she learned of this story from her grandma and her parents. When Lauren was young, somewhere under five years of age, a woman lived in a house that existed between Lauren’s grandma’s property and Judy’s family’s property. The woman lived a reclusive life and was thought of as a little eccentric. Her children had moved away many years prior so she was living alone when the incident happened.
Late one night, the woman’s house caught fire. Neighbors called 911 and firefighters rushed to her home. By the time help arrived the house was pretty much burned to the ground. The police searched the rubble for any human remains but none were found. The fire appeared to be arson. The fire became even more suspicious when police searched the property and found something odd. They found she had buried her belonging all around the property. This caused the police to believe that she had set the fire herself and planned to come back in the future to gather the items she had left behind.
Years went by and the woman’s land became overgrown with grasses and weeds. Lauren heard the story from her parents and grandma and decided to check it out for herself. She went with Judy and Judy’s brothers to explore the grassy lot where the woman’s house used to sit. While walking across the remains, Lauren spotted something that looked like a smooth rock. She picked it up and discovered she had been looking at the top of a porcelain cat. She brought the porcelain cat home with her and showed it to her parents. They jokingly said they hoped the woman wouldn’t come back to collect her belongings, whether alive or as a ghost. Lauren ended up keeping the cat but she said afterwards she had dreams of the woman trying to get into their house to retrieve the cat.
After Lauren finished telling the story she brought us to her room and showed us the porcelain cat. The cat was in a sitting position and was less than six inches tall.
Whether this story was completely true or not, it still gave me chills- especially after seeing the porcelain cat myself. Knowing Lauren, I’m pretty sure she believed what she told us. I hope you enjoyed this story as much as I did when I first heard it.

Re: My Friend's Creepy Story
That was a creepy story. I bet that porcelin cat would make a great Halloween decoration, just by virtue of it's history.
