Seriously, I think the reference is to that old Mayan legend that the world is going to end on or around Dec. 21, 2012 (or is it the 22nd? I have heard both dates). Supposedly the Mayans had carved a calendar or a bunch of prophecies into some temple or other, and they all ended at that time. Maybe they just ran out of stone to carve.
Of course, the Mayans didn't have our Western calendar, so whatever they wrote must have been "translated" into our system of measurement.

If folks wore going to do an end of the world theme next Halloween, people could dress up as the thing they think will cause the end... be it an asteroid, a super volcano, zombies, ect.
