Foods of days gone by

Post by Spookymufu » Tue Jun 29, 2010 11:09 am

Do you guys remember any foods from your childhood that arent around anymore?

I have a few, I'll start off with "Hydrox" chocolate cookies, they were similar to Orieos but IMO, tasted better. Keebler bought them when they bought the SunShine company and then discontinued them :(

Let me see if I can get this right. I remember they use to have: "Nutter Butter Peanutbutter Sanwich Cookies." They were shaped like a peanut, were vinilla cookies with peanut butter in teh center instead of frosting. They may still be around, but I haven't seen them in my local grocery store in a long time.

I remember Hostess "Yo Yo"s, Zagnut candy bars and "Raleigh" candy bars. I even remember the tv comercial for "Raleigh" candy bars. ".....leaves no room for hunger....."

I also really miss the raspberry filled Hostes powdered doughnuts. I loved those but they are only available in a few states now.....unfortunately, Texas isnt one of them :(

Yuck. I used to hate Hydrox.

I'll tell you what I really miss. Post used to make a cereal called Oat Flakes, and I don't know what it was about it, but it was the best tasting cereal ever. They stopped making it years ago, and I've never found anything like it since.

I used to love Drake's products ... Funny Bones were my favorite! Ring Dings were another one. I remember when they came out with the peanut-butter filled cream ones. They're still around ... you can buy them from the company, but they won't ship to Texas during the hottest months of the year. I think some grocery stores in parts of NY, NJ and PA still carry them.

Another food I loved was Butoni Pizza Rounds. Frozen pizza where the cheese and sauce were inside the crust and you popped it into the toaster.

Figurines Diet Bars. I wasn't on a diet when I was a kid ... I think my parents were. But these things were really good! Discontinued during the mid or late '80s.

Danish Go 'Rounds. Like a Pop-Tart, but oval shaped, supposed to look like a danish.

Carnation Breakfast Squares. Came in three or four flavors. Chocolate, vanilla ... can't remember the others ... maybe chocolate malt or strawberry?

Snackin' Cake. Instant cake mix ... I loved these!

Mr. Chips cookies.

Shake-a-Pudding. Came with a special cup, where you put the instant pudding mix and milk together and shook it all up.

Libbyland TV Dinners. They had this pirate scene on the box. Speaking of TV dinners, does anyone remember when they used to come in aluminum containers because you cooked them in the oven back in the '60s and '70s?

Ooooo...Figurines were too good. They made them so tasty that I would eat several in a row, completely defeating their purpose. :P

I used to do the same thing! I checked with Pillsbury to see if they actually do exist, but, sadly, they do not. :(

The wafers were so thin and crisp and whatever they put in the chocolate out was should probably be illegal.

I remember when the Dolly Madison Company use to make the Zingers before they sold it to Hostess. Zingers were cake treats shaped like twinkies, and you got 3 Zingers to a package. They also featured "Peanuts" characters on each one. The chocloate Zingers featured Charlie Brown with Snoopy. The strawberry Zingers featured Lucy, and the vinilla or yellow Zingers featured Sally.

Spooky, I believe the diet candies you're thinking of were called Ayds. I remember seeing magazine ads for them back in the '70s. I don't know if this was just a coincidence, but when the AIDS epidemic struck in the early '80s, I didn't see Ayds ads anymore. I guess at that point, they really couldn't tell people they could lose weight if they had Ayds.

I remember Zingers. Did they make a coconut-covered flavor?
