Re: What made you mad today?
My dad taught me a lot more then just how to drive a car. I'm no auto mechanic by any means, but I do know a few things about how they work.
Spooky, your essentialy correct, except that the most I have ever seen on any car was 2 belts. Serpantine belts are great, and a vast improvement over the older system, but they do tend to slip, and with all the pullies it has to turn, it's a lot harder to tighten it enough soit won't slip, and yet they have to be careful that they don't tighten it too much, or it will break.
I assume that the serpantine belts of tody's cars are also made of nioprene. If so, then you should be good for something like 200,000 miles before it breaks. Of course, the timing belts (toothed belts) are supposed to be change between every 60,000 and 65,000 miles, but I have never seen a niopreme break. I was supposed to repalce the timing belts in my motorcycle enging, and there are two of them, at 50,000 miles according to the manual, but I forgot about it, and I had it replace when the odometer turned over 65,000. The gave me the old belts, and they showed no sign of wear at all, though my nephew who has better eye sight then I have, did say that they appeared to be a little stretched.

I'm mad because I woke up this morning with a sharp pain under my ribcage. I just hope it's a muscle strain from work yesterday. It could be an alien about to burst out from my chest? That would be cool!

I appreciate that comment.adrian wrote:andybev thats a REAL problem and deserved to go on THIS thread... i'm sorry about that
Luckily it turned out that it was the serpentine belt (that was brand new 2 months ago...).
A rat had decided to make it's home under the hood insulation the night before.
When I started the car that morning it freaked out and fell into the engine compartment, and into the spinning cogs of death, forcing the belt out of the grooves. I know because I had to use a shovel and fling it into the garden...

Re: What made you mad today?
Good Grief Charlie Brown! My brother had a simular problem with a brand new Ford F-150 he bought about 3 years ago. He was having problems even getting the starter to turn over, and on 4 or 5 different ocassions had to have the truck towed to the dealer for warrenty work. As it turned out, there was a mouse that made it's home in the hood insulation, and he designated one of the servo systems as his personal urinal. The you-know-what shorted out that servo system, and it totaly shut down the electrical system. I don't remember what that part was exactly, but a repalcement and a mouse trap, and the problem never recurred.
Hopefully you won't need a new belt. all though I would be a little worried that it might have been stretched when the carcass of that rat went through all those pullies.

Re: What made you mad today?
That was my concern as well, so I had it towed to the shop and it should be ready this afternoon.

Did you guys watch the Masters of Horror last night on SyFy? The rat with a man's face in the one episode just freaked me out.

Re: What made you mad today?
That's one king sized rat. I'm suprised the belt didn't break or come right off the pullies. Rodents also love to do their "business" on various electrical components to boot. If I were you, I would be setting out traps in your garage to keep that from happening again. Rodents also like to gnaw wiring insulation, and serpitene belts, and they can just do all kinds of damage.

I know allllll about rodent damage. I live on a ranch so there's not a lot of options, so you just deal with it.

Some of you guys love to chat about automobiles here!
Anyway I was mad today because my girlfriend told me she really can't bring home some seafood dinner because of her boss!
But hey! Good news that she changed her mind that she will bring them all home for us to eat together because her boss wasn't at work! Ha haha! I'm getting happy now!!

I used to have ex-gf from India back in 1991 until we broke up in 1995. She's Hindi, or Hindu whatever you call that religious name. She's a great sexy indian, and she's too hot for me!
I truly do miss her!
But right now, I do have a gf and she's hot latina!
