Ghost Town Season

Post by Nostalgiascape » Sat Apr 04, 2009 4:05 pm

April still seems a might bit early for most of our Halloween fanatics. Many of them are still in their coffins or hanging upside down in a cave, or wherever they may dwell. I like some of you crawled out of my Crypt early. So this is officially Ghost Town season, to put a fashionable spin on things.

Never too early for me!

I was looking at pics of ghost towns and am even thinking about taking the bike out to one some time in the next few weeks.

There's quite a few "ghost" towns where I live.
As for me, the ever alert Mau Evig must always be prepared for trouble and protecting innocent lives from the forces of evil. But this dark hero finds peace amongst the grave dwellers. After all, there's no place more peaceful or safe than a grave yard...because everyone's dead. :D
But needless to say, this cool cat is already looking forward to Halloween this year, and can be counted among the early bird haunters.
By the way Nostalgiascape, I love your spin on "off season" by calling it "ghost town season."
This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,
A ghost tried to approach me and got leery.
Ask him a question and he vanished in a second...

I didn't make the connection until I read down a few posts; ghost town season is perfect.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

There's a town called "Ciaro" in Illinois. It was a major hub during the Civil War, and it apeared that it was going to grow into something significant for a while, and then it more or less died out. The local Historical Society is trying to preserve it, but it's in pretty sad shap. Many of the buildings are in terible repair, and the pot holes in the street are unreal.

I was thinking about taking my bike down there some time over the Easter weeking, but believe it or not, is snowed last night, and it's darn cold out there right now, and I'm a bit 'gun shy' about taking the bike out until I know that those temps aren't going to drop, and I'm not going to be 200 miles away from home on a motorcycle in the middle of a raging blizzard. That happened to me when I was only 5 miles away from home back in 2000, and it was NOT fun.

Anybody visit any outlying and desolate cemetaries lately?

Desolate cemeteries are another story. I do visit them, but only in a respectful way. I believe that it's not nice to disrepect the dead.

No need to be disrespectful, but you can absorb the eerieness of it all and jack that into the Halloween spirit. There is a cemetery way beyond Cherryville Missouri and into the wildreness. It is a family cemetery named Woodlock cemetery. There are metel tibes going down into the earth where the family members are buried. Creepy.

Note (If you are a child, I advise you to not go into a cemetery at night. Nevermind us crazy older folk and enjoy your candy and parties.)

There's a cemetery like that just on the outskirts of New Lenox Illinois. It's also the burial place of the brother of Samual Clemons (a.k.a. Mark Twain).

I use to go there a lot during the Halloween season when I was in high school, but it becaue a hang-out for drug abusers.

There's a cemetery with a weird headstone, a slow-spinning marble ball, that was featured on Ripley's Believe it or Not. I visit there occasionally to see if it turned any.

I think the woerdest tomb stone I ever saw actualy had music engraved on it. I don't remember the title, but a buddy of mine was curious as to what it sounded like, so we went out there, and he brought his cornet with him. It's a well recognized classical piece, but I don't remember the title.

Woodlock cemetery sits on top of a steep hill in the woods on the side of a gravel road deep in the Missouri hills. To get too it you have to walk up a tall, steep and unkept set of stone stairs. I kid you not. It's creepy like that.
