What do you like to decorate with? That bucket of blood?

Are Spider Webs Dangerous?

Post by Rising Dead Man » Mon Sep 22, 2008 4:37 pm

I put up spider webs downstairs and in the living room. And just now I found a real spider in one! Must have thought it was a real web! I told my sister about it and she said it can be dangerous to put up spider webs this early because mold can grow on them if it is humid. I was just wondering if this is true?

I think your sister has a point. Those fake spiderwebs do tend to get moldy and it's still pretty warm and humid out there.

They get moldy?! Never heard that before. Mine have been up for like 2 weeks already. I'm more worried about them being flammable. We have them over the mantle. My wife does this awesome design with them over the fireplace every year with a light up spider in the middle, and we have candles sitting on the mantle underneath it.

I'm tempted to do a test and see just how flammable they really are. What could possibly go wrong?

They trap mostuer, and when it's humid, there tends to be a lot of moisture in the air that condenses in the morning, and that is how you get the mold. The mold grows in the moisture that condenses and then is trapped in the spider web. I've seen it happen.

Fmalability is also an issue, but then there are a lot of fire hazzards to deal with when putting up Halloween decorations. I use candles in my Jack O'Lanterns, and I also use strings of lights which can malfunction and cause a fire. The best thing to do to avoid a fire hazzard is to make sure that Ll lights are unplugged and all cangles are blown out if you are going to be leaving them unattended.

Can you see the mold? Because if I see any mold I am taking em down! And getting new ones to put up closer to Halloween.

Like I said, it's not the spider webs themselvs, it's the water that promotes mold. If you keep them dry, you won't have mold. If they get wet, or moisture condenses on them, then you could get mold. Fake spider webs themselvs are made of some kind of plastic that mold spors can't survive on.

I've had fake sypder webs up inside my house for the last few days of September and the entire month of October, and through the 1st and 2nd of October, and never had a problem.
