They really nailed the Portland aesthetic.

The show's creators said they chose Portland because it is an area that can double for the Black Forest. Also, I think that expression "Keep Portland Weird" was already in vogue, and that was the aesthetic they were going for, obviously.

I ran across an article yesterday comparing Grimm to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was of course a much better known hit. The writer said that several people on the creative team were Buffy alums. He/she also argued that, while Grimm should appeal to that audience, it is a more mature show that deserves more attention than it's gotten.

A couple or three of the cast members elected to stay in Portland after the show ended, at least for a while. I believe that was true of Silas Weir Mitchell (Monroe) and Sasha Roiz (Sean Renard). And David Giuntoli (Nick, the Grimm) married Bitsie Tulloch (girlfriend Juliette) in real life after the show ended. They have a daughter now. I think they met on the show.

Russell Hornsby (Hank) was the lead in a short-lived detective series my husband and I liked. He played a detective who'd been paralyzed on the job, with flashbacks of his earlier, pre-injury life. Claire Coffee (Adalind) had a story arc on that series. I always got the vibe that the Grimm ensemble cast really liked each other in real life.

They don't include it on the DVD set, but the night the series finale aired, just ahead of it, the actors Silas Weir Mitchell and Bree Turner (Monroe and Rosalie) came on the air to thank the fans for watching. They said, "Nobody thought this show would last for six weeks, and you made it last six years. We are so grateful to you." I have never seen a anything like that before or since, and I was utterly charmed. They really appreciated their audience.

Humor: Sleepy Hollow school board is seeking a new teacher for the fall

"We are looking for an educator who won't lose their head over minor issues."

Image

Hello, unemployed teachers! Are you looking for a job in a quaint little town? Will you take the job no matter what gossip you've heard because you yearn to leave larger schools that seem to have larger problems? Then join us in Sleepy Hollow! We are actively seeking a new instructor to teach students of all ages. We've been without a schoolmaster since last October. Because of this, we are willing to take whatever bright-eyed, energetic, gullible—I mean passionate teacher comes along. No experience is necessary!

FINE! We know you googled us and saw the hateful lies someone spread. Sleepy Hollow indeed went through five teachers in the last five years. Tongues were sure to wag about the cause of this turnover, so we'd like to set the record straight. Their departures had nothing to do with the Sleepy Hollow school district.

Those teachers were happy with the support they received, the students, and their benefits package. We provide free housing. We pay a competitive salary and offer plenty of vacation time for teachers to explore our beautiful town and the nearby woods. They also have ample time to court our local women. 80% of our eligible bachelorettes are ready to settle down due to the lack of opportunities or the tradwife movement on social media, either way, you might end up teaching your future bride. (Does that sound creepy? I meant it as a lighthearted joke that is also sometimes true.)

Did I mention we even provide a horse to make commuting easier? It can travel long distances and across life-saving bridges with ease.

In case you have any doubts left in your mind, those other teachers did not leave because of anything the Sleepy Hollow school board failed to provide. Perish the thought!

They were all brutally slain by our town's less-than-picturesque ghost, the Headless Horseman.

But that danger only occurs once a year! Once you survive that, your life in Sleepy Hollow will be pretty enjoyable.

However, please remember your station. We don't want another singing master incident where our local educator gets too big for his breeches and sets his sights too high. It is just as easy to fall in love with the daughter of a seamstress as it is the only daughter of the wealthiest landowner. While one may prefer setting yourself up for a comfortable future, it might be in your self-interest to avoid angering the local suitors who have been vying for that same wealthy woman's affections for years.

Boys will be boys, and pranks can sometimes turn serious. It's better to fit into the fabric of the community, not upset it.

Speaking of the community, we insist that the school teacher attend every holiday event. This includes the annual Halloween party. We understand that this might seem like a bad idea since that is the night the Headless Horseman appears. Yet we can assure you that we do our best to wrap things up early so you can get home across the bridge before he rises to seek heads.

You might be thinking, "Just cancel the event." But the kids love it so much! And the parents love to see their offspring happy. And we, the school board, aim to please those parents—particularly parents who yell at us for hours. When we tried to move the party by one day a decade ago, you would have thought we murdered a puppy. So now we leave it alone.

Headless Hessian ghosts can only take your head one night a year. Angry moms and dads have the rest of the 364 days to do so. There is no bridge you can cross to find relief from a PTA mom.

So, if you are up to the task and wish to apply, we, the Sleepy Hollow School Board, look forward to hearing from you. Just give us a heads-up. Hahaha. Sorry, we like to think we have a weird sense of humor here in Sleepy Hollow.

Probably my favorite Halloween story of all time.

As luck would have it, the town I moved to has a handful if covered bridges, including this one which is across the street from my new apt building!

Thanks, Hippieluvn, I got a good chuckle out of that.

Andy, your photographic skills always impress me. I guess that's a footbridge only? It looks a bit narrow.

Yes it is.

It's a reproduction built in the 80s, but the others are all period, turn of the last century.

There's a self guided tour map to download and it's a day long trip.

Covered bridges are not much of a thing in the South. Several years ago, when my sons and I were vacationing on Lake Erie, we spent part of a Sat afternoon chasing down covered bridges in Ashtabula Ciunty, OH, because I'd never seen one in person. The jaunt took us into Amish country. It was interesting.

You know, I've never seen any of the Friday the 13th movies. I'm not sure how I've missed them.

That...is awesome.

That movie was my first modern horror movie, I was 13 and it scarred me.

That being said, 'Psych' did a great tribute episode to that movie.

Looks beautiful. I don't see much fall color there yet, either.

I've been watching Grimm on Murfs recommendation and I'm digging it, pun very much intended.

I discovered that one of my grade school teachers appears on the show as a recurring character!

He plays a species of timid rodent that is in perfect keeping with his true-life persona.

Are you talking about the guy who plays Bud, the repairman? I've always imagined his wesen nature is a kind of beaver. He was a local actor they employed for one episode, and they liked him so much that they made him a recurrent character.
