Re: Daydreaming about autumn.
Andy, I totaly agree. "Nights in White Satan" really set the pace for the opening sequence, and very appropriate since the story takes place in the 1970s. There was a lot of great music played, and it was actually funny as a comedy.
Murf, the whole saga of Barnabas being a reluctant vampire was certainly a trend setter to other movies and tv shows of it's ilk. "Dark Shadows" certainly was a classic in it's own right, and quite possibly the most unique show of it's kind to ever hit the airwaves. However, I think the "reluctant monster" really began with Lawrence Tolbat, the original wolf man. The first time I ever saw "The Wolf Man" on tv, I was reminded of Barnabas Collins in the way being transformed into this out-of-control homicidal monster really tore him up. Quentin Collins was also torn up by being a werewolf, though he started out as a bit of a nare-do-well who drank, caroused around and had a rep for being a womanizer before Magda placed the werewolf curs on him.

Re: Daydreaming about autumn.
A lot of the "Dark Shadows" story line was a retelling of many of the old horror classics. In addition to Barnabas Collins (Dracula) you had Quentin Colling (werewolf) Adam, (Frankenstein Monster) and John Yager (Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde). Then there were all the fun added extras. The creepy old houses, ghosts, witches, and even Nicholas Blair (the devil himself) to entertain horror fans like me. Then there were the Leviathan People, Gypsy Curses, E Ching, and time travel and parallel time. The list goes on and on. The only thing I didn't see on "Dark Shadows" was an Egyptian Mummy, or space aliens. And let's not "A Picture of Andorran Grey." Charles Delaware Tate painted a portrait of Quentin Collins that would transform into the werewolf instead of Quentin himself, and the painting would age and get more hideous with each transformation, but Quentin lived on. Even though there were no space aliens, there was also good Science Fiction.
Yes, "Dark Shadows" had it all.

Re: Daydreaming about autumn.
I was a fan of Dark Shadows too. It is too bad the 1991 version didn't last. I haven't seen the file or the old 1960s one TV series.
Edit:
I just looked it up on wikipedia and it appears that there were 1225 episodes of the 1960s show! It appears that they are available to stream too.
Looking at that page there is also a "Dark Shadows: Reincarnation" show mentioned as being discussed in Sept 2019, sort of a "Dark Shadows: The Next Generation" show.

Re: Daydreaming about autumn.
That would be great. A good "Dark Shadows" revival is what people like us need. It will probably air on a premium pay service, however.
Hopefully it will be available on Blue Ray or DVD.

I stumbled.across Dark Shadows last night, late, on a channel called "Decades.". It gave me a kick to see it.

Re: Daydreaming about autumn.
That's the nice thing about having it on DVD. When ever I want to scratch that "itch," all I have to do is open up the coffin shaped box they're in and pick out what ever episodes I'm in the mood for. For now I'm watching the werewolf episodes. The infamous Quentin Collins stalks my screen.
I do plan to get the revival series and all the movies that were made after I'm done shopping for a car.

I have a subscription but I dont think it includes specialty issues, so thanks for the heads-up.

Re: Daydreaming about autumn.
You are correct that the specialty issues are not included in the regular subscription. That is true of Southern Living as well, also Taste of Home.

Re: Daydreaming about autumn.
Andy, I love Southern Living, too. I tell people at church that it gets between me and my spiritual salvation, because I am supposed to want to live a life of heroic virtue, but what I have always dreamed of (and never attained) is the Southern Living lifestyle.
This month's issue has a brief article about looking at autumn leaves on the campus of Sewanee. That is my daughter's alma mater, and it is a beautiful campus.
