Creepy Country Songs

There seems to be an old tradition in country music that is lost now in the modern pop country era. The tradition of seriously creepy songs. Songs like Ode to Billy Joe, One Dyin and A burying, me and little Andy, and Psycho by Eddie Noac. And while not all creepy country songs would fit on a Halloween mix, some do. If you do your research online you'll discover such songs and I hope you'll listen to them late at night with the lights out.

Oh, I remember Ode to Billy Jo. The girl who wrote it (Bobbie Gentry?) was from Mississippi, so she was quite the celebrity in my home state back in the day.

Ode to Billy Joe was eerie. I still picture dead eyes in the river water staring at me when I hear it.

I think this was by Charlie Daniels. The title, if I remember correctly was "The Wooded Swamp." That was one creepy song that told a story that could be a great movie if done right. ".......you can hear 4 young men screaming. You can hear one old man laugh..."

Alan Jackson's Midnight in Montgomery is a ghost story.

This is not a country song, but it's pretty creepy. It was composed by Henry Mancini. It's the main theme to the movie "Experiment in Terror." Ernie Bishop used that song as the opening theme to his tv show "Creature Features" which aired in Chicago on WGN. "Creature Features" was among the first of those shows that featured the old Universal monster classics, among others, and was hosted by Ernie Bishop. He would recite a poem at the beginning of every show to introduce the movie, but instead of making an appearance, there was a picture of a character played by Lon Chaney Sr (Lon Chaney Jr.s father). I have that song on vinyl, and a whole myriad of Henry Mancini master pieces.

Oh, Mancini was great, but you're right, he wasn't country.

Mancini is one of my all time favs. Charlie Daniels did, I think, a few songs that told scary stories if memory serves me well. On the tv show "The Waltons," Jason writes a song about the ghost of a Civil War soldier's wife who could be seen mourning her dead husband. That song was VERY country in both the story and the way it was performed.
