Re: First signs of season
Halloween gift wrap, music, movies, books, decorations, you name it, the www has it. Amazon, ebay and a whole host of others are just waiting. Like I said, I have a lot of lost time to make up for. One thing I want to do is to replace all the florescent tubes in my 'man cave' with black lights, and then put up Halloween decorations that react to the UV. That will really enhance things for the big day. As is my nature, I will have Halloween up before September is over, and all through the 2nd of November.

My daughter just received the most charming little book, Monsters You Should Know by Emma SanCartier. She paid about $10 for it on Amazon. It is a beautifully illustrated children's book, but the content is drawn from folklore around the world. We both loved it. She said it is a good example of "cutesy macabre."

Are you a fan of Edward Gorey?Murfreesboro wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2019 6:19 pm My daughter just received the most charming little book, Monsters You Should Know by Emma SanCartier. My parents were married in their parish church on Halloween, 1947.
Dad was an usher on Sundays, took collections and occasionally did readings.
Mom was the quintessential'church lady who monitored the hymn placard and invariably played the organ at mass and other functions.
Funerals paid the most.
Grief can be very profitable (prophetable?).
My ' 'ABC' primer was The Gasleycrumb Tinies, and picture books included a few Charles Addams compilations.
My sister and I would play Clue, with Alfred Hitchcock's 'Music to be Murdered By' playing on the turntable.
I honestly had no idea that my upbringing was anything but ordinary until kindergarten.

As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

Re: First signs of season
At the tender age of 7, "Dark Shadows" was my introduction to the world of vampires, werewolves, ghosts and everything else Halloween. My mom was never a huge fan of picture books that had pictures of monsters in them, but I did have a picture puzzle which featured some sort of a reptilian monster driving a Model T. That picture gave me nightmares when I was about 5. Anyway, "Dark Shadows" as I said was my introduction to the world of the macabre. I knew who Barnabas Collins, Angelique, Chris and Tom Jennings and a whole host of others long before I ever saw the archetypical Count Dracula as portrayed by the illustrious Bela Lugosi, or the iconic wolf man as portrayed by the incomparable Lon Chaney Jr. We also had a "Dark Shadows" game which we played for years after the show went off the air. Unfortunately most of the pieces were lost or broken, and it ended up in the trash when we moved to New Lenox.

YAHOOOOOO!!!!! Krogers in Streator Il already has ceramic pumpkins, skulls and other Halloween decorations on their out door display, and I just may buy a couple for outside in my front yard. They're a little on the pricey side, but they look great.
I am also seeing more Halloween posts on facebook, too.

Re: First signs of season
Haven't seen that yet here, but nature may be signalling an early fall. The garden at church, which is maintained to give food to the needy, is ceasing production several weeks early. I am seeing a (very) few colorful leaves falling, and once this week saw an orange branch on one tree. Normally our leaves turn in October. It's still hot, but nighttime temps are cooler than normal. Spiders are spinning their webs all over the place. Not sure what this means, but I am thinking the season may come early.
We have had an unusually wet summer. I don't know if that portends an early fall or not.
My daughter has started wearing her Halloween shirts around the house. She says she is SO ready for Halloween.

Re: First signs of season
Like I said, Summer is my favorite season, but October is my favorite month. I also love it when I see signs of Halloween in August, and I HATE IT when I see Christmas decorations on the store shelvs in August. Unfortunately that Family Dollar store still does that, but it's only a few weeks before we start seeing real pumpkins at the grocery store, along with Halloween candy, decorations and the like. This year, I am going to celebrate the entire Halloween season WITH A VENGENCE!!

Re: First signs of season
Up here in the Great Pacific Northwest we've been having a weird low system cool temperatures rain and thunderstorms up in the mountains for the past few days, with temperatures never getting past the low 70s.
I've turned off the air conditioner and turned on the electric fireplace.
I'm thinking about putting in Something Wicked This Way Comes in the old DVD player this afternoon.

That sounds like a great plan. It's been rather warm where I am, but as the air gets cooler and crisper, I will be screening more horror movies and Halloween episodes of various tv shows I have on DVD.

Re: First signs of season
Somebody at church yesterday gave me butternut squash from their garden. I have roasted it for lunch, to accompany the leftover hamburgers and hot dogs my husband grilled last night.
Sort of a mix of seasons in that menu.
Oh, I have seen Reeses pumpkin candies at Kroger, so the Halloween candy is starting to show up.

Re: First signs of season
Heatwaves not withstanding, I ordered "The Car" on DVD, "Trick R Treat" the 1986 version on DVD, and the original Universal Monster "Dracula" Legacy Collection on Blue Ray, and they should be arriving no later then Tuesday of next week. I also bought some Reese's Peanut Butter Cups at Aldi's yesterday. They weren't Halloween specific, but the packaging color is orang, black and yellow, and I was in the mood. And I originally said I was going to cook out on the grill for Halloween, but if I can swing it, I just might slow cook a brisket roast in the crock pot instead. I'll roast it with onions, garlic, corn and potatoes.
