sorry but this is just dumb, if you're gonna leave a bowl of candy out with a sign that says help your self then expect people/kids to grab it all, no right to complain about it, if you want everyone to have a "fair" share then put some effort into it and hand it out your self and the fact that the news picked this up and even reported on it is beyond dumb.......

When my kids were of an age to TOT, I often left candy at home if no one was going to be there to hand it out. I don't think I ever once came home to find candy in the bowl. Just sort of goes with the territory.
I remember once, when I was a grad student, I went to a party and left a bowl of candy on my doorstep. When I got back, even the bowl was gone! I found it a couple of days later in the bushes. Somebody had played a Halloween prank on me. I laughed about it.

Apparently, the homeowner was not home but wanted to make sure the kids got their candy anyway. He figured some kid would take all the candy, never expected it to be an adult. That lady effectively stole the candy from the kids, not the homeowner.
