Still hot as blue blazes here and the humidity is unreal. Saw where parts of east and middle Tennessee got hit pretty hard with storms last night. Hope Murph and her family made it through okay.

Re: Summer gets the short end of the stick
Thanks, Kolchak. We got lucky with the most recent round of weather. The high winds totally skipped our county, although they were all around us.
And we are very cool now. The weatherman this morning said our temps right now would be normal for the first day of fall!

Re: Summer gets the short end of the stick
Just got home from watching the football game at a bar downtown. Before that I was at the Padres/Atlanta game. Football and baseball on the same day, that's how I know fall is coming. Couldn't wait to get home so I could pull out that trusty old broom. Sorry Kolchak, some teams are winners, some teams are the Braves.

Public schools start this week around here. My husband, a teacher, is back at work. My daughter will have her first (half) day on Weds.
I won't really call it fall until Labor Day weekend, though.

Re: Summer gets the short end of the stick
Wow...schools start this week Murf? I would have at least thought they would have started in late August, not this early! When I was in school this would have been my last month of Summer vacation, and I would have been moaning and groaning at all the back to school sales at the store. Of course it doesn't help that I hated school back in the day, I wasn't the most popular kid and I got picked on a lot. If there wasn't so much pressure to fit in at school and to have friends, perhaps I would have done better academically. In fact, sometimes I wish I was home schooled, but I know that wasn't possible with my parents work schedules. Matter of fact, I know I would have done better academically because when I went to that Community college in 2009 - 2010 I got on the President's list 3 times and the Dean's list once. As an adult, I don't care as much about peer pressure and fitting in as I did as a teenager.
I'm not sure if school has started yet around here, though I might have seen some buses running. Kids kind of got the short end of the stick this year with Summer vacation due to all the school closings during the year. They didn't get out until June, and have to go back in August.
I might talk with the school and see about getting a substitute teaching job. I have college background and a High School diploma and from what they told me, that's all I'll need.

Re: Summer gets the short end of the stick
Around here, subs can get $50 a day. I have never done it, but maybe I should. It would be a relatively easy way to pull down $50.
When we lived there schools in Virginia didn't start until after Labor Day (the King's Dominion Clause, put in by legislators near Richmond who wanted to benefit the local amusement park).
When I was growing up in Mississippi, I'm pretty sure my summers were longer. We got out in early June and went back around Labor Day I think. There has been "school year creep" around here. When my older boy (25 today) left the year-round school to start a conventional school, he started back well into August. But for a number of years now, this early August opening has been standard. At least they do get a fall break now.
I think with all the anxiety about school performance, the various localities are trying to extend the school year. However, I am not convinced that keeping the kids in school longer really helps their performance that much. My daughter is being brutalized (IMO) by her IB (International Baccalaureate) program. They seem to expect these IB kids to perform at the standard of college seniors. She has been working on some type of thesis about Shakespeare most of the summer.
When I hear about the school schedules in the Northeast, it sounds to me as if they go to school almost until the 4th of July but get off until Labor Day. Around here, they get out around Memorial Day but go back in early August.

Re: Summer gets the short end of the stick
I went to parochial school in the 70s and 80s.
Our summer began memorial day weekend and ended the day after labor day.
From what you two are saying about contemporary education it makes my experience seem like a luxury.
3 months off, no supplemental tutoring, no structured play dates.
It was us with our bikes, friends and a lot of free time.

As usual the Braves start out strong and as soon as August hits, someone hits the plunger and down the toilet they go. But at least they were looking good for awhile. When the Falcons start playing they'll be sliding down the slope to nowheres-ville by the third game.NeverMore wrote:

Re: Summer gets the short end of the stick
I graduated from high school in 1978. Grade school we got out in June and went back after labor day. By the time I was a senior in high school, classes began in late August. Most Georgia grade and high schools started fall classes Monday. Before long it might be school year round. I always hated this time of year. 2 a day Football practice started 2 weeks before school started back. Just knowing that I had to go back to class........

Re: Summer gets the short end of the stick
It feels like Summer's over already, although technically the Fall Equinox isn't here yet, and we've had a few hotter days here and there, but it's been raining a lot, the leaves are turning, and I'm already seeing the summer stuff fly out the door and the incoming of Halloween goods.
The kids around here just started back at school, and Monday will be my first day back at college.
Summer really flew by this year. I'm not even sure where it went, it seemed like it ended in July, which is sad because it seems like it should be longer. Technically it is, but I think I'm seeing what you all mean by Summer being so short on here.
I'm definitely looking forward to fall, but the year just seems to be flying on by. Really puts into perspective how short life can be.
