OMG, Andy, I've had those things. They were in a trial size around here a few months ago, along with some other experimental flavors. We thought they were God-awful. And we had no clue why anyone would think to combine chicken and waffles, anyway. Is that something people eat together in other parts of the country? We just couldn't figure it out.

Anyway, this morning, I had multi-grain Cheerios, topped with raspberries, blueberries, & bananas, for breakfast.

Yes, it is. If you look chicken and waffles under 'restaurants' you will probably find one near you.

Well, I did as you suggested, and sure enough, there are quite a few restaurants that feature this dish, which is apparently considered "Soul Food." I saw a chain called Lo-Los in the Western US, something run by Gladys Knight in Atlanta, and something up in Chicago, too. Funny, having grown up in Mississippi, I have always maintained that "Soul Food" is simply Southern food, but this is one combination I have never run across. I mean, I'll eat black-eyed peas, turnip greens, and cornbread (hold the sugar, please), all day and all night. And I have certainly heard of people putting honey on fried chicken, though I don't do that myself. But waffles and chicken? Never heard of it. You learn something new every day, I guess. To me, that is too much starch, too much fried stuff, all on one plate. And I am unfamiliar with the combination of fried chicken and maple syrup, although I guess it wouldn't be much stranger than honey on fried chicken.

I like maple syrup on bacon or sausage.

I just finished a big plate of scrambled eggs with mushrooms shallots and sauteed onion, and a side of fried Spam.

Spam with bacon in it.

new, we have the new Hostess line here in Tx now, yes I have bought the new Twinkies but they dont look smaller but I have nothing to compare em to

Gladys and Ron's Chicken and Waffles is a big deal in downtown Atlanta. It's only about 3 blocks from the famous Varsity Drive-In which boasts imho the best chili-cheese-slaw-onion-mustard hot dogs around.

Gladys and Ron's is not a very big restaurant and if I've heard one big complaint, it's that you pay a lot but don't get a lot. The food you do get is very good though. Being a small restaurant you sometimes have 1 or 2 hour waits to be seated.

A few blocks down the street from Gladys and Rons Chicken and Waffles is Pitty Pat's Porch. It has the best fried chicken and peach cobbler in Georgia imho! We eat there at least two or three times a year. REAL Southern cooking!(my mother and grandmother are dead so I don't get the real deal much anymore) Pitty Pat's is the real deal. Not expensive either.

Kolchak, I have heard of The Varsity. My daughter ate there with a Girl Scout Troop once, just for the experience, but I have only driven by it. The last time I was in Atlanta (summer 2011), my husband and I went with friends to a very Southern place, but I don't think it was called Pitty Pat's. I've forgotten what it was called. I remember I had shrimp & grits, and tomato pie.

I'm wondering if the chicken & waffles combination is really old, or something new that has caught on with the "soul food" crowd. I just never heard of it, ever. And I thought I'd heard of all that deep South stuff.

Oh, and for the record--I had one hard-boiled egg this morning, because I intend to swim a little later, and I don't want to have eaten much.

Chicken and waffles isn't old, it's just a gimmick. The first I heard about it was in the mid-late 80s.

Just like you, I was raised on Southern cooking and while biscuits and gravy, grits and fatback are found in our morning meal, I've never seen deep fried chicken and waffles served for breakfast except in some of these restaurants.

Btw....Years ago had some Yankee friends down for some deer hunting. We got up early to go out and before leaving we had a typical breakfast.

Bacon, eggs, ham, red eye gravy, biscuits and butter milk gravy and of course grits.

Having never tasted grits, my friend said he'd like just ONE grit!
