Favorite Halloween monster

Old fashioned, cartoon ghosts. You know, the type that look like a floating sheet with circular, dark eyes/mouth commonly accompanied with the sound effect "Booooooooooooo."

In that case, I got a gif you should like...

I have to admit, I've been sitting here for 2-3 minutes, mesmerized, watching over and over and over...great find! What's it from? Do you know? Just a random?

Also, the ghost in your countdown signature meets my criteria for favorite "monster" as well, although that specific ghost looks particularly soft. Charming, nonetheless!

For me, it's a toss-up between Dracula and the Wolf Man. I'm a tad partial to the Wolf Man, but I also like the Frankenstein monster, too.

Jadewik, I agree with you 100% on zombies. The only zombie movie I ever enjoyed was Serpent and the Rainbow as it actually dealt with Haitian voodoo costumes. It was still somewhat Hollywood-ized, but they made the effort. I would recommend it if you haven't seen it.

Haha!-- Funny you should mention "The Serpent and the Rainbow"-- I just finished the book! I heard that Wade Davis, the author, was not happy with what Hollywood did in the film, which apparently stars Bill Pullman. I don't know if I'll catch the film or not because books are typically better than film and I only just read the book so it's still quite fresh in my mind. Actually what got me on a zombi kick was randomly stumbling across this YouTube video series episode 1 of 6 is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXcjioLLvRQ The series also interviews Davis. Granted, I'd take some of it with a grain of salt as they've mis-labeled the photo of Felicia Felix-Mentor as Clairvius Narcisse (4:32 Part I)....

I also read a little Zora Neale Hurston-- the part she wrote on HooDoo and VooDoo and Zombis. I'd only read "Their Eyes Were Watching God" before... but now I have a new found respect for Ms. Hurston.... as she apparently took part in some VooDoo rituals in order to get information on some of the darker aspects of the religion. What she wrote was complimented by Wade Davis.

I read it also, but many years ago. I still have it somewhere, I need to dig it out and re-read it. I remember reading Wade Davis didn't care for the movie, and I honestly can't blame him. As an adaptation of his novel and experiences, it's way over the top. But as a Hollywood fantasy-horror movie, it wasn't bad. I haven't read Zora Neale Hurston, but I may try to look her up. Is her stuff currently in print?

It's from The Conjuring. I just saw it over the weekend and it scared the bejezus out of me. I recommend it. But I should warn you, the ghosts are not very nice.

Got to go with the Creature from the Black Lagoon. It's bad enough to battle a monster at night...in the woods....or in a swamp...or in an old haunted house....or in the giant run down castle....But when you are underwater in HIS world.....That's just much Cool!

Next time you go swimming in the ocean or a big lake at night, and you have no lights. Think about what's right beneath you as you kick your legs and look into the deep dark water!!

They have a compilation of her folklore writings (which contain VooDoo and HooDoo stories) over at Amazon, here The HooDoo is in "Mules and Men". It has writing about Marie LaVeau, Rada Drums, and Hurston's experiences with different HooDoo rituals. VooDoo and zombies are talked about in "Tell My Horse", which also has some ritual songs. If it's not in print, they should have copies at the library. She's a pretty famous author-- most notably for her book "Their Eyes Were Watching God".

This post makes me smile when thinking about all the past Halloweens and all the monsters I used to be afraid of. When I was little and my grandma still does this to this day she brings out little children’s books about Halloween. I'm pretty sure one is about a caterpillar on Halloween, but the one that always scared me was the book called, "The Door under the Stairs." It scared me out but it always intrigues me! I would have to say when I was younger it would be the Creeper episode the guy who always said Creeper had red hair, green skin. He really freaked me out as a kid. Now today it is usually scarecrows that turn. Such as at Cedar Point when you see a scarecrow with a nice smile on his face he resembles the joys of Halloween such as when you as a kid go to a farm with pumpkins and cider. Then near evening the scarecrow changes and becomes scary, dark brown almost.

I find some horror movies scary, but recently not as many. The one movie that still scares me every time I think about it though is The Strangers. Such as when the girl is knocking on the front door asking if a certain person is there.

As for my favorite monster it has always been the classic ones such as ghosts, witches, scarecrows, werewolves, purple people eater, Frankenstein, and vampires. My favorite was always Dracula.

Hope you haven't been watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel!

They tagged a couple of 16-17 foot Great Whites and followed them with this underwater remote camera.

This took place off the coast of Massachusetts during the summer, and those sharks were just a few hundred yards from really busy beaches.

They surprised the researchers as how close those big sharks got to the beach. One person got bit, and it was the first confirmed shark attack in like 80 years. It wasn't super bad, but it tore the guys leg up to the point he needs surgery.

Jaws is STILL out there!

A guy was killed by a Great White here a couple years ago. I always thought they liked warmer water but there are frequent spottings off our coast.

I did a lot of diving in the Florida Keys when I was living in Miami. Once saw a Tiger shark of about 5 feet in length but he went his way and I went mine.

Bull sharks are the ones that tend to have the worst attitudes. I was diving with a small group of friends off Andros Island in the Bahamas and a school of Bull sharks showed up and you could watch as they slowly became more aggressive until we had to get out of the water.

Not much fun, I can promise you!

I don't swim in anything that isn't lined in tile.
