How do you celebrate Halloween?

Post by Boogeyman » Mon Sep 24, 2012 2:36 pm

What I mean by the question above is this. Do you decorate? If so, do you go all out? And when do you put it up? Do you do more than that? Watch horror movies or Halloween centric movies? Go to an amusement park that is decorated for Halloween. Just describe what your celebration involves.

Starting 9-26, I will do something every day to celebrate up through the time I go to bed after midnight on Halloween night. I will be putting my purple and orange light strings on my balcony tomorrow. I will probably put the rest out on Wednesday. I have quite a lot of decorations. I even have a Halloween tree that I get out and put Halloween themed ornaments on it. And no it is not just a black tree or a Christmas tree. It is a Halloween tree. I will post a picture if I can find one online.I also have some light strings that I put in my three entry ways. One has pumpkins, another has skulls and the third has ghosts

I have a Halloween playlist I will put on my media player tomorrow and start listening to at the gym Monday through Saturday through Halloween day. I do the same for Christmas.I will also listen to http://halloweenradio.net/index.php and http://horror-theatre.com/ several times. The second site plays all the old radio shows, but only the horror and thriller ones. Some of them are quite chilling. I will also be watching some of the movies I have in between the ones I watch on Syfy, AMC and TCM.

Normally I would be going to this farm that does a haunted corn maze and an incredible haunted woods but since I am not working, I won't be doing that this year. I fear that I might get burned out before October 31st since I will be home all day except when I am at the gym or if I do have an interview.

Please detail what your celebrations involve.

Well, for me, Halloween isn't just a one day thing. It's a whole season that begins next friday and runs through November 2nd, or All Souls Day. I usualy start off the season, (usualy September 28th) by putting up my decorations. I'll be doing that on Friday. Then on October 1st, I carve my first jack l'lantern, and I try to keep at least one carved and let jack o'lantern in the house through out the month of October. October is also the month that I screen more horror movies then any other time. I have a few traditional favs, like "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown," usualy about 10 or 12 times during October. I usualy try to screen at least one horror movie a night, and Every week I feature one of the universa monster classi monsters. First week of Oct, I watch all the old "Dracula" universal classics. 2nd week of october I'll screen all the old "Frankenstein" oldies. 3rd week of oct, I'll screen al "the Wolf Man" classics, and then in the 4th weei I concentrate on my favorite 'haunted house' movies like "The Changeling" and "The Haunting." "The Blair Witch Project" is also a huge part of my Halloween tradition.

Finaly when the 'big day' rolls around, I have a minimum of 3 freshly carved jack o'lanterns ready to adorn my living and one to greet the ToTers, while I settle in for a whole day of watching various horror movies that I didn't get around to screening, or reruns of "Dark Shadows." My nephew brings his kids over for ToT, and when they get done, I screen something more in tune with what children like 'The Monster House," for instance, and we have a weenie roast in the living room fire place. When the party is over, ToT is over and it gets ever so closer to that "Witching Hour," and the weather is dry enough, I start preparing for my Midnight Halloween Motorcycle Ride." I usualy try to set it up so I'm on the bike just a little before midnight, so I can be out during "The Witching Hour. " I don't go any major distance as it's usualy quite chilly, but I do go up to the Grotto, and then I drive down a few streets where the houses have the most extravigant Halloween displays. Then when I get home, I pick out one more horror movie to screen, and then I hit the hay.

For me it's a season, too. Actually, I start looking at my scary movies in September, and I have already watched several of them (had Amityville Horror on this afternoon). I also love to buy all the new Halloween magazines in the grocery store, and I try out their fall recipes. (The new Taste of Home Ultimate Halloween has a terrific Octoberfest Pork Roast we had yesterday).

I'll start decorating the yard in early October. I find that I have more TOTers if I have the lights up and blinking for two or three weeks before the big night. I love Jack-o-Lanterns and always carve several fresh ones, although I also have a few acrylics I save from year to year. With the acrylics, I commemorate pets who have passed on--a cat for a cat, a dog for a dog, etc.

I try to fit in some community activity, although it might be something different every year. A corn maze, a haunted attraction, a Halloween carnival.

I also have been reading horror classics lately. I finished Jekyll & Hyde last week and am into Dracula now.

I generally costume for the big night, but I don't have much imagination about it, I fear. I am almost always a witch. I guess I like being a witch.

I start setting up decorations indoors and out the weekend before October starts. I have purple lights in my bushes and orange ones along my roof. I really want to find good green ones to maybe go around my garage door. Every year we buy pieces for the department 56 Halloween village. They are expensive but they look great. We watch scary movies though not with as strict a schedule as Mike more like whatever we get the urge to see on a night we feel like a movie. On the Saturday before Halloween we also host a costume party where everyone brings a Halloween themed food item(normally junk food). The big day itself varries normally a scary movie or two and hope to get some ToTers unfortunetly we only ever get like 6 :(

We do a 3 day celebration overall. Of course we do a countdown, but we also start a gathering on the 30th. We do fun rituals, bringing in Samhain/Halloween, welcoming those who have passed. Do the dummy dinner. Party with the last bonfire of the year! Do trick or treating with the kids. Make JackOLanterns, which all must be done before Trick Or Treating because it keeps evil spirits away. Well, one of us goes outside while the kids are inside watching scary movies and knock on the door, windows, etc. It freaks them out and is such fun! We go into All Souls Day by visiting local Graveyards. Some with loved ones, and some because they are sad and forgotten. We leave candles for the spirits of those who have passed. It's definately a great time of the year here! Getting excited now too.

Sounds like an old-timey celebration. Back to the roots of All Hallow's Eve. I like it!

Mine is center more on horror movies but my wife is center more on decoration and creative things. She makes a spider web and graveyard stuff, zombies, skeleton, and even a projected eyeball in upstairs window for night.

I like to decorate, I do inside and out. The outside has corn stalks, scarecrows, an enormous plastic jack o' lantern that fits over the lamp post in my front yard. I have a party on the Saturday before Halloween. Every year I try to write a Halloween story, but haven't quite managed to capture the feeling I'm after just yet. I start snapping up the Halloween periodicals the minute they hit the stands. I usually try to read at least one Halloween book/story. Last year it was a collection of Halloween short stories, this year it's a book called Dark Harvest. I also watch scary movies and some not so scary Halloween shows (The Great Pumpkin and Scary Godmother, etc). This year I'm hoping to hit some haunted hay rides or perhaps a haunted house.
We're the farmer's scarecrows
We scare away the birds,
We keep the farmer's corn safe
Without any words.
But when Halloween comes
We jump out of the ground
And we scare the boys and girls
When they come walking 'round.

I will go camping with my older boy on Saturday and we will talk about horror in the woods where we camp under the sky with no tent or man made shelter. :alien:

I hope it doesn't rain on you or worse, that some animal pees on you.

Witchy, could I have one of those karmel apples???? Pleas??/ Pretty Please???

Chang, that might not be a good idea unless you live in a warmer climate, and Boodyman also has a point. You can get rained on or urinated on by an animal, or sprayed by a skunk.

While rain certainly is certainly a possibility and I'm not sure about animals urinating on you...I wouldn't be to worried about skunks they shouldn't bother you unless you bother them.

On the contrary, a skunk will spray you if you startle them, or you get too close to them. A friend of mine opened his back door, and there was a skunk right behind it, and when the door bumped the skunk, he lse loose, and stunk up his entire back porch. This happened aobut 3 years ago, and STILL, on a hot day, you can smell skunk.
