Vampires

Post by Pumpkin56 » Tue Sep 27, 2011 5:49 pm

Just posted a similar thread on werewolves. Does anyone have any preferences on their vampires? Do you like the ugly killer monsters from movies like From Dusk til Dawn? Or do you prefer wussy vampires like the ones in Twilight? Or, are you like me and prefer your vamps a little seductive like Dracula--able to switch from charming to killer in the blink of an eye? And what about vampire rules? Should they be able to walk about during the day? Garlic and crucixes? Holy water? Being able to change forms? How does everyone prefer their vampires?

I like the ones that can switch from prince charming to monster killer. As regards to the rules. Full vamps can't walk in daylight however half vamps can although they prefere the night. garlic dont work boys crucifixes do. Holy water is like acid. The ability to change form is a no no i.e from human to a bat however from human to vamp that I like

Again, old school here! I like the traditional film vampires...Lugosi, Lee, Palance, Carridine! By far Bela Lugosi as Dracula is king of the Vampires! Christopher Lee brought a more action pack vampire! John Carridine had that vampire look. I guess its all subjective? The new vampires in the movies now have potential, but allot of CGI used. It has its place, however, for me the Twilight vampires seem to girly for me. Or or too teen oriented! I know this is not so, but I go for the old school Vampires! LOL

I dont know why people think twilight has vampires in it. It has some guy who sparkes in the sunlight. Vampires dont sparkle.

I like the Dracula one's, although I haven't seen much of the old school movies!

Gary Oldman's from Bram Stoker's Dracula was awesome! :)

Agreed! Vampires should NOT sparkle!! They are the undead! Who even thinks that putting sparkly and the undead together makes sense?!

I love all the old school vampires as well. I agree with Jack--Oldman killed it as Dracula. I loved his transformations and the fact that he had just enough humanity to be likeable but also feared.

As a Vampire I prefer the kind that are seductive and move in mysterious ways...they captivate your attention and control you with their seductive minds and lust for blood. A Vampire needs to be threatning in some form and capable of doing the things you fear the most but also attractive and alluring...I also prefer the ones that become the beast and revel in their blood thirst.

I have no problem with the Twilight movies and do enjoy them but I will repeat this again...Vampires do NOT sparkle...that part should have been left out. But the Twilight movies I find myself enjoying them for what they are...

But the Vampire is always going to be Bela Lugosi...Count Dracula. I also enjoyed the Nosferatu Vampire and the Lost Boys.

I agree with those of you who say you like your vampires alluring but lethal. In the novel Dracula, the vampire can walk in daylight, but his powers are not as strong then. And he can change forms, too--into a bat, a wolf, or a mist. The Gary Oldman Dracula is the closest one I've seen to the novel (though I believe they added the romance about him looking for his reincarnated wife). But it is a terrific version of the original story, IMO. I watch it every Halloween season at least once (have already watched it this September).

I believe the "tormented" vampire originated with Barnabas Collins on Dark Shadows, and I love him, too. He could still be scary, though. More recent tormented vampires, like the ones in Twilight, just aren't scary at all. I miss that. I did very much enjoy the Mick St. John take in the too-brief CBS series, Moonlight.

Don't get me started about the Twilight novels & movies. I actually do accept them for "what they are," as someone said above. I have read all the books and seen the movies. But I do see some big problems in the writing of that series. Even before the movies were cast, I much preferred the Jacob (wolfboy) character to Edward, the vampire. I knew Bella wasn't going to end up with Jacob, but he was far preferable to her other love. That whole series is geared so much to adolescent girls, who think that what they want is a lover who is totally immersed in them. But an eternity of that would be hellish, I believe.

I also have a pet theory that the real reason Edward is a vampire in that series is so that there is a reason why his & Bella's powerful love remains unconsummated for so long. He fears that if he makes love to her, he will kill her. In fact, I suppose that does happen in the last book of the series. In our culture, where society has relaxed all its rules on this subject, it is hard for a writer to find a reason to keep two characters apart, yet the desire is usually stronger when it is being denied.
