Spiderwebs

Post by SpookyBlackKat » Mon Sep 12, 2011 7:52 pm

When it comes to spiderwebs, what is your preference? In terms of appearance, do you like the cheesecloth, the rope or the stretchy web?

For the purposes of this research, webcaster guns are not an option! :)

Don't feel hurt Spooky.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

It's a logistical reason! I love the guns myself but it simply cannot cover the square footage needed and give the massive desired effect I'm going for. Nothing personal. :)

mine arent really "web casters" in the hot glue sense, but they do give a more realistic effect, and you have to lay it on pretty thick to get the same coverage of the cotton stuff, it just depends on the application, I use both for different effects..

But it's all good because I currently dont have any to sell anyway.

I personally like the stretchy cotton ones. It seems like the rope ones are a little comical because every one I've seen has been sparkly or glittery. To me, the cotton ones are a little more realistic. The more you stretch them and thin them out, the cooler the effect. And I love sticking little things like skulls or bones in them. Make it look like some kind of serious beast resides in that web

Ok Spooky, but how much glue did you have to use for that second photo? And how long would that hold up outside? I'm trying to cover the front of a 2 story house, an entire front yard and create a web tunnel approx. 60 feet in length. Like I said, I love web guns! I just didn't think they would be practical for this look considering the space I need to fill and how long I want the display to be able to last. If I'm wrong in that regard, let me know! I just want it to look the best it can.

well, like I said, these arent hot glue "guns", they are liquid "shooters" very different really, they use a mix of rubber cement and thinner mix, but no, this wouldnt be practical to cover the front of a house and they hold up fine as long as it isnt windy, but as the mix dries, the webs shrink, so you really need to shoot them the day your going to "use" them.
the best bet for what you just described are the big bags of cotton/stretchy webs, they just wont look realistic but it's a trade off.

Yeah, I'm struggling with a mix of visual appeal vs. practicality. I want to start 3-4 weeks out and gradually build up to finish the week before. I'm finding a hard time with any reference photos online or anything. I know I'm not the first person to cover the exterior of their house in spider webs.

Apparently you're using magic search words that I'm not! lol!

Those are great. I love the last one. That's kinda what I'm going for. Add a tunnel of webs in the mix and I'm good to go. I guess the old stretchy stuff will be my best friend this year. :(

SpookyBlackCat-

That is a really awesome idea for your house/yard this year and I really hope that you post pictures :)

As for the webs, if you are starting several weeks out, are you not concerned about what the weather might do them? I know it's going to be a major project putting all of them up, but I would be a little afraid that any kind of wind or rain might trash them. On the other hand, if you had them up for that long, you might actually trap some real live critters in there and it would look totally realistic  (sorry. that's terrible. but I think it's a very real possibility)

If you use the stretchy cotton ones, maybe you could lightly dye them in some tea or coffee or something to give them an aged look? They are so white to begin with, maybe doing something like that would help make them look a little more realistic? Just thinking out loud here...

I decided to go a different route. I hired a true professional to create a web across my front porch. He's doing an awesome job! The web is huge.
