The Devils Rejects gets 4 blood stains

I give this film four out of five blood stains. Blood stains are my usual ranking system instead of stars.

The Devils Rejects delivered. It was a twisted film where the killers are supposed to be the anti heros, and law enforcement is supposed to be the enemy. Rob Zombie sold it well. It was very gritty and delightfully twisted. I even loved the very dark humor. Plus, damn, the soundtrack to this film is awesome.

From what I've been told about this flick it is very violent, especially toward women, and disturbing to watch. Oddly that's not what I look for in a horror movie. Are you a fan of the ultra violent, more realistic type horror flick?

I am a fan of varying types of horror. Realistic ultraviolence doesn't really get under my skin.

I guess I never found those movies all that much fun. Unlike a Friday the 13th or Halloween movie, which I never found realistic, real-world-crime based horror just depresses me more than scares me.

Sometimes Horror should be realistic, or else is it really horrifying? Sometimes the only sense of fear you feel from a film, is if this could actually happen to someone.

Yes, often what is most scary is what seems plausible, the "It Could Happen To You" sensation. But some of the genre's best films have that supernatural element that, in a sense, gives you a break from the horrific events you're watching. It supplies a separation and I think allows you to enjoy the film. My favorite scary movies have that suspension of disbelief required to invest in characters.
Frankenstein.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Exorcist.
Poltergeist.
Blair Witch Project.
An American Werewolf in London.
A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Those films donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t happen around the corner but in another world. Even if the film is set in the here and now there is something about the presentation that tells you this is a horror movie.
Again, I've never seen The Devil's Rejects but from conversations I've had with those who have it seems like you leave the film morose. For my money I'd rather be wowed, either by the cool special effect or creepy scene. A straight on gouge and gore fest never appealed to me.
But that's just me.

I've heard the ultraviolent style of horror movie called "torture porn". You know, a lot of screaming, pleading, nudity (or near nudity), blood, guts, body parts, etc., but very little real suspense or storyline. I like a but more finesse to my horror flicks and not so much 'gouge and gore' (as you so beautifully put it!). I get a much bigger thrill out of things that go bump in the night than a maniac with a machete. (No offense to my friends who are lovers of the genre

Torture Porn is exactly what I've heard it called! The creater of 30 Days of Night (coming soon to a theater near you) was asked if horror was dead, in regards to the slipping profits of movies in the genre, he said horror wasn't dead but torture porn was. MHooch you've got your finger on the pulse of the industry, or maybe it's the jugular

I read elsewhere from a poster who was promoting a film with a "strong rape scene." Let me tell you, I've got a wife and a daughter and I don't want to see a strong rape scene. I'm not entertained by the abuse of women. Now someone could pipe up and point out the hypocrisy of a guy who likes Nightmare on Elm Street movies where women are killed but doesn't like rape scenes.

Well the distinction I make is the presentation and tone. You've got a monster that changes by the light of the moon, kills you in your dreams, or is the creation of sewn together corpses. I've already suspended disbelief just to make it through the opening credits. To call that the same as these snuff films being made is short sighted and intellectually dishonest. I wonder if these people watching these films, I'd guarantee you are mostly guys, would like all male rape scenes in these "horror" flicks.

Or is that just wrong?

I totally agree with you Dr Strange, I AM a wife and daughter, and also Have a daughter, and I won't watch movies with female abuse in them.

And there is a HUGE difference in the 'reality' based torture porn pics and those, as you mention, where you suspend disbelief. I think you hit the nail right on the head. Well said, my friend!

Well I respect your opinions. But I am also not apolagetic for watching films such as Wolf Creek and Hostel. My range of Horror is wide.

I think that is probably true of most horror fans, they tend to devour all horror flicks. For me it's the same as me liking comedies or action flicks.
I like comedies, but only a few would I ever pay to see. For example, I have never seen an Adam Sandler comedy (if there is such a thing

).

I like action movies but few are really good enough to spend two hours watching. It's the same for horror movies, I have specific tastes but when a film meets those it's great. Agian, I usually go for the "monster" type of movie and not so much "the guy next door is going to bash your brains in." There's enough of that on the news.

Hey there... just jump in on the conversation... sorry... in regards to the Devils Reject... squeal to the House of a 1000 Corpses (I own both), personally I enjoyed both movies... I don't know which one I liked more... House of a 1000 Corpses was more Halloween like, but Devils Rejects carried the twisted outlook and portrayal of Sickly Sadistic characters... Now I am not a violent person, or enjoy watching people be tortured and abused in reality... I understand movies such as these are not everybodyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s cup of tea/blood type.....and even though it is extremely gruesome, bloody, and demeaning to men and women I still appreciate them for they were done very well, the acting, the craziness and well the own way it was filmed was to be commended in my books... No, I would not want my children to watch this as they are very young and would not see it perhaps for what it is..... a movie, a horror flick etc... and may be really frightened, confused... or whatever by the scenes in it... My brother and wife rented it one time and only got about 20 minutes in to it and shut it off... I understand why but for me though, it was a good series, as is many films... I totally understand what was mentioned previous about the abuse of women/men... violence, rape etc... not to be promoted but I just feel as I am sure most, is why there are age restrictions on movies like these, as there are for porn films etc... Anyway I like almost every sort of horror flick out there... from gruesome, bloody, suspenseful, strange, cheesey.... low budget etc... they are all good... I do agree the more suspenseful older movies are the best.... as it makes you mind play tricks on yourself in the middle of the night when you get up to go to the bathroom! LOL... Anyway thatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s my two cents... LOL... Cheers All![
