Winchester Mystery House

These aren't the best photos... but it's better than nothing, right?

There are things I didn't take photos of because my family said they'd share theirs from when they went... I never got 'em.... which is sad... but it just means I'll have to go again! :D

The number 13 is predominant in this house. There really are staircases that end at the ceiling, doors that open to walls, a door that opens to a 30-foot drop, missing fireplaces, pipe organs, stained glass, and luxuries that defy all explanation.

The (short and poorly written) story goes something like this:
After Mrs. Winchester's husband, inventor of the Winchester rifle, died... the lady of the fortune got really into the paranormal. (She even has a seance room in her house.) Mrs. Winchester had a medium tell her that she needed to build a house large enough to house those who died at the hands of her husband's rifle. So... she started her mansion. She was the designer. She would build, re-build and expand and expand... when she died, they were still working on the house. Since it's so large, it's easy to get lost or turned around inside the house.

So... her house supposedly is home to several spirits. I've seen TV ghost stories about this place... where employees would see people walking outside past second story windows only to check and note that there is no outdoor balcony in that particular area. There are also supposed ghosts in the basement.

Unfortunately, it's been so long since I've visited the Mystery house, I can't recall all the juicy details... so if anyone else has anything to add, feel free.

I do know this house inspired the TV mini series by Stephen King titled "Rose Red".

Now... on to the images.

I have some pix at home I will post.

It's imposable to describe just how big this place is unless you've experienced it live.

The display of the numerous Tiffany windows and doors that were not yet installed when she died makes me think of a pirates treasure chest, not to mention the ones tat were already in place.

The ballroom with it's spider web windows and the 1 inch high stairs are cool too.

I believe that if any house in America is haunted, it's Sara's house. However the grounds and gardens give off plenty of 'spooky' vibes too.

I found this shot online here http://planetagadget.com/2007/11/08/man ... ter-house/ scroll down to this photo and click it for the large sized image.

It's really, really big. I'm sure if she were alive today she would be in here every day.

I remember first seeing a special on tv about the house years ago. It was the first I'd ever heard of it. I hope to get to go one day. I'm sure it's quite amazing in person. Are there any huge open rooms in the house? From what I remember from the stuff I saw on tv it looked like there were just a ton of smaller rooms and hallways and whatnot....but it could've just been the editing.

There's a ballroom that's a good size. The carriage room is also pretty big (it had to be)...

Actually, the Winchester House is in San Jose which is about 400 miles north of San Diego. You may be thinking of the Whaley House which is considered one of the most haunted houses in the country. I think I saw a ghost there the other night. I definitely saw something unusual.

I saw a very interesting documentery about that house on the History Channel. Appearently the wife of the guy who made the Winchester gun company what it was felt guilty about all the people who would die through a Winchester weapon, so she had that house built to accomodate all the ghosts.

I have also read some on the Winchester house. I am a HUGE Ghost Hunters fan too, and I watched the episode where they did an investigation of the house and came up empty. Hmmm. I have to trust Jason and Grant. It is a very beautiful and interesting home though. Amazing work of art and insanity. I think Mrs. Winchester was told that construction was never to stop, so there were builders working 24/7.
