Halloween Discussion Forums, Costumes, Horror!

So I have yet to turn off my orange Halloween lights. This is because I have noticed my neighbor across the street (and two over) still has theirs on. Part of me thinks it's been 17 days turn them off the other part doesn't want them to have theirs on longer. What do you think??

The neighbor that did the haunt last year turned the front yard into a harvest fest, with scarecrows and lighted pumpkins...looks awesome.

There certainly is a carry-over between Halloween & harvest/Thanksgiving decor. I don't think I'd feel compelled to clear the autumnal stuff out completely until after Thanksgiving. Of course, I have cleared out the ghostly/witchy stuff, but scarecrows and pumpkins are just harvest, IMO.

Leave em up. Kinda like Murfee said, it could count as autumn decor as well. Of course to you, they are Halloween lights so that may keep the Halloween spirit alive a little longer for ya.

I am probably the one dissenter here. The Halloween decor needs to come down. The autumnal decor can stay up. Why? Do you leave your Christmas tree up all year? If not, why? I think seasonal or holiday decorations begin to lose their importance or specialness if left up too long or put up too early. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else besides me.

I agree about crossover harvest/autumn decorations staying up longer and normally all the Halloween stuff would be in by now in fact everything is except those lights.

I will probably be putting my Christmas lights on my balcony railing this week. Doesn't mean I will turn them on, but I want to get them out before it gets much colder. It was 38 degrees today. And usually I bring my Christmas tree up from the storage room when I take my Halloween tree down. If I don't, then I have to move everything out of the way to get the Christmas tree out and that is just more work than is necessary.

So in a way, I am violating my rules. I usually don't decorate the Christmas tree right away though.

Oh, you are right that you can have too much of a good thing.

When I was a child, I persuaded my mother to leave a Christmas tree up in my bedroom until late June! Finally she insisted it come down, but the Christmas tree wasn't so special to me that year when Christmas came, because I had spent too much of the calendar year looking at one.

I wouldn't leave out ghosts, jack-o-lanterns, witches and such long after Halloween (maybe until the third, through Hallowmas, you know). But I have no problem leaving up those portions of the autumnal decor that work for Thanksgiving as well. That could include scarecrows, hay bales, uncarved pumpkins and gourds, etc.
