What defies the moment of Halloween to you

I am writing this cause I was thinking of my happiest times in my life and it all stems around Halloween time. I am thinking of the times when I was little and would go trick or treating with my friends. Afterwards I would visit old quiet dark neighborhoods, a few streets lights, just a couple of kids out. Fast forward about 25 years and here I am doing the same thing. last year we went out and had a good time at a few bars around halloween time, the next morning I took my bike to go get the car. Peddling thought the neighborhoods I look around and have that same feeling as I didi when I was a kid. the empty streets,( though it was day time but morning). Leaves are starting to turn. I had an ipod listening to music on the ride the album was a group called Halloween Alaska. Anyways those moments are what I call Halloween. Its more then the decorations, trick or treating, the feeling of been scared, the autumn feeling in the air. the certain things you do that reminds you of halloween. What is your defining monment of Halloween.

There are a lot of things about Halloween that give me that special moment, but remembering back to my childhood. it was very much as you described. During the month of October, my friends and I would go to this old abandoned house on Drake street that was abandoned for years and perported to be haunted. We also played our share of mindless pranks, among the worst, is we bought about 5 or 6 cans of Nair hair remover, and we completely stripped all the dogs in the neighborhood of all the fur on their tails. (With the exception of some of the larger and meaner dogs)
Then there was ToT, and great movies on tv. The Halloween excitement was in the air as soon as the farm stand on the corner of 111th and Drake put the pumpkins out for sale.
Most recently, the most fun Halloween moment, at least of my adult years, was that first trip I made to the Bartonville Insane Asylum back in October of 09.

Thanks Tantraman. I think we all have both common ways and unique ways of enjoying the big day.

For me it's an intersection of spirit, nostalgia & just a touch of melancholy.
Of course that isn't it exactly because it's almost impossible to define.

I can't say for me that it's a single moment. It's more of a feeling, something mysterious and spooky. There are many moments that make up that feeling, watching the mist rise early in the morning, seeing the leaves change and the night's become longer, feeling the chill in the air, and all the wondrous decorations depicting things we know don't exist but we somehow still wish for that magic. We thrill to that sense of danger without really being in danger. And for me, that sense of possible magic is indispensable to the season.

Basically took the words out of my mouth! Nicely said. I would also add the nostalgia feeling I get as well.

Well right now I am seeing more and more grocery stores stock pumpkins. That is certainly one defining moment, though not necessarily THE defining moment.

is the title supposed to be;
What defines the moment of Halloween to you
or did you mean "What defies the moment of Halloween to you"

noticed it when it was first posted but was waiting to see if the OP was going to edit the title or if that was what they intended to type

I didn't even notice. I had to look closer before I could see that it was "defies" and not "defines," but I assume the original poster of this thread meant to type "defines."
