Halloween Work Display

Post by SIEFKA » Mon Aug 05, 2013 10:49 am

Hello everyone!

I was hoping for your help on this new project that I was happy to take on for my work.I have always been very creative and loved getting into projects that just let my mind go crazy and design stuff. Well at my work at the local pet store the owner came up with an idea of making displays that advertise certain products and also capture a certain theme. When I first saw this project I thought immediatley that I want to make a display that has a theme that is fun for me so that I can really get into it! So I had the month of March for my display. Everyone at my work kept asking what theme I was going to go with such as if I was going to do St. Patricks Day or March Madness. I thought to myself that those are too much overused and I wanted to do something fun.

So I grabbed the product Flexi Dog Leashes and with those leashes I made a display that advertised America's Greatest Rock Band: Aerosmith. They are my favourite band so it was very easy to get into the project and I spent four nights in a row up till 2 am just having fun working on the project. I tied Aerosmith and the dog leashes in by having song lyrics that apply to dog leashes such as: You determine where to draw the line, or those other leashes don't give you this much rope. I then just had to put product advertisement on the display such as these leashes have a lifetime warranty and are approved by animalcollege.

Here is the display I was able to come up with:

So with that being said I was on my way to go buy some more pumpkin plants while listening to my Halloween music playlist in my car. I all of the sudden came up with an idea. I have to make another display! But this time it will be for the month of October. They said at my work the past display that I have already made has basically won the contest of who can make the best display. Well I want to put my skills to the test and make an even better display that will blow peoples minds! So I was able to talk to a co-worker of mine and they let me have their display for the month of October. I was thinking of doing something with pumpkins. Obvisoiuly something that is Halloween related but still incorporates the product very well.

This is the product that I plan on using for my next display. We have already had a cheaper display for this product but that was before this competition even began. I want to do the same product simply because you cannot have Halloween without pumpkins. This is the product:

I thought instantly I could have a black and purple display on each level, A giant fake pumpkin on the top of the display. I am thinking of getting out my pumpkin power tools and carving the logo into the pumpkin and having it light up on the display. Then on the sides of the display have vines coming down from the stem of the big pumpkin down the sides of the display. I was thinking later of having smaller pumpkins being attached to the vines of the display with maybe either carvings on them or information about the product.

I would love to hear more ideas that you have about this! Thankyou! :D

that will really make them scream!

Unfortunately your picture didn't show up. A quick thought that comes to mind is emptying some of those cans and cutting jack-o-lantern faces in them then lighting them up. In a way which you can still read the label.

Maybe a skeleton or ghost dog that's eating the food?

Here is a picture of the display when nothing is on it. Sorry I don't know why the picture is rotated that way. Anyways I really like that idea but unforutally my boss most likely would not like me using the cans that way. I wish I could though. I have thought of a few more ideas though. I found out that I will not be able to use lights on the display. Well I could put lights on the display but it would cost me a fortune since I would have to buy double AA's over and over.

Am I putting a lot of extra effort into this display? Yes of course. I enjoy it and I can celebrate Halloween while making this display. Now onto my ideas:

With this display I was shopping around Michaels and Jo Anne Fabrics looking at the Halloween decorations they had set out. I saw that they had leaves in fall colors. I was thinking of buying a few packages of those and spread those on the inner circles. I was not sure if I wanted to do each inner circle the same way with leaves. I would like to do each inner circle different. As for the top layer of the display I am going to go to Michaels to check and see if they have some sort of smaller creepy gate. I was hoping to get a side of each gate then have them standing upwards at the top of the display. I would like to see then if I could tie some fishing line to the pumpkin I will have carved with their Fruitables Logo on there so as almost if it were floating. Then coming out of the top of the pumpkins I was thinking of having vines stretch all the way down to the floor with smaller pumpkins attached with faces on them. Then on the pumpkin leaves I would love to have information about the prodcut taped to them. I was wondering what to do about the poles though. The poles are clear and each one can be removed. So I am able to stick stuff on the insides of them. Well I am off to Michaels, I will think of more designs.

How about rechargeable AA batteries? Buy an extra set and switch them out every day, putting the ones from the display in the charger over night. Rechargeable ones are a bit more expensive but you could always use them at home when you are done with the display.

That could work! I never thought about it that way! I don't think I want to do lights simply for the fact that it would be costly. I wish I lived a little bit closer since I do live 30 minutes away but I do want to have at least a light inside the pumpkin. The hardest thing for me right now is finding a smaller gate that I could use to support the pumpkin or at least some sort of creepy structure.

Do you think I should put fall leaves at the base of each circle? I was thinking of maybe having fake grass at the top level I am not sure. The same goes for the pumpkin vines, I am not sure since not many people carry them so I was thinking of just using some sort of green vine with leaves.

What about dropping some rope lights down those hollow, clear post-tube things? Rope lights should have a plug, that could plug into an outlet. You could also do string lights in the tubes-- they're a bit cheaper than rope lighting. If you get the LED lights, it will also keep heat from the lights down. You might include some air holes, just to make those tubes breatheable.

I do like the idea of fall leaves around the base of each level of the display. There are also those black leaf garlands at Michael's that would be cool-- they're about $3 for 6 feet. Granted, they typically sell fast. They also have other fake-leaf garlands there.

I love all the ideas for this but it got me thinking. I already made one great display that the managers said it was the frontrunner. I thought about pumpkins and getting Halloween decorations. I decided I would much rather spend my money on that stuff rather than making a whole display. It would be a lot of fun but I would rather skip it and buy Halloween decor!
