I'm sure many of you are like me and see Halloween as more than just another day on the Calendar.
It has an essence.... a force... and like a storm, you can Feel it coming.

Most years, yes, but oddly enough, this year I seem to be holding on to summer. Maybe that's because I have had a better summer than I sometimes do. The weather has been moderate, I have been swimming a lot, and I had two out-of-state trips. However, I am sure that I will be all about Halloween, once we turn the corner into September.

The weather is usually what brings on those feelings. It's rainy and drizzly today and there were showers last night. There was a coolness in the air yesterday that signaled change to me. Things really don't start to feel like Halloween until September. Remember in September we'll dip below the 12 hours of sunlight in a day. That alone could trigger Halloween feelings more than a store setting up shop. We are tuned to the sun.

You are right that the autumnal equinox helps trigger those feelings, but I also agree that there is a subtle break in the weather in August. I have two sons with early August birthdays, and I used to plan water park outings for them the first weekend in August. I remember that it always seemed to be the last truly hot weekend of the summer around here, the last one likely to be in the 90s. After that, the weather would start to moderate. If you pay attention, the vegetation starts to change in the month of August, too. Growing season is just about over. Leaves (on some things) are just barely starting to turn.

We've had a cool snap for several weeks now in my part of the country and it's really helped put me in the mood. Yesterday, I could smell the change on the wind. It's hard to explain, but there is a smell to the air that comes around now and into September. Though the Autumn Equinox is the line where dark comes earlier, I start my job and 5:30 in the morning so I've definitely noticed that the sun has been coming up later and later.

But I do agree, Hallow, there is a feeling in the air with Halloween. I could never quite capture what it is, but it's there none-the-less.
We're the farmer's scarecrows
We scare away the birds,
We keep the farmer's corn safe
Without any words.
But when Halloween comes
We jump out of the ground
And we scare the boys and girls
When they come walking 'round.

I'm having lunch on a patio right now and it's freezing.
Okay, not really but it's only about 65 and the wind coming off of the bay is not warm.

There are lots of trees in serious fall mode. The ginkgo and liquid ambers are off to a Good start, and even some of the maples are giving a hint of color on their crowns.

In a month it'll be humid and hot :(

I spent the day digging in the side yard. Felt plenty hot to me. Generally though, this has been a cooler summer than usual. Maybe cuz it's my first summer in Lemon Grove? Location of the best climate on Earth. That's what they say.

Easiest job in the world is weatherman in San Diego.

I woke up shivering last night and had to get out a comforter.

You are in the San Francisco area, right? My older son is out there right now on vacation. He called me Sunday evening and spoke about how chilly it was. Said he was glad he'd brought his fleece jacket. He was outside, sitting in an area beside the Golden Gate Bridge. Said it was beautiful and that it was strange how the fog covered San Francisco, while Oakland was in full sun.

I'm about 35 miles south of 'the city' in Palo Alto.

The best time to visit San Francisco is fall or spring, it can be pretty unpleasant in the summer.

Once August 1st rolls around, then it really starts feeling close. Of course Sept 1 and October 1 too, but August 1 seems for me to really feel close to Halloween!

San Diego is great. I was there for nearly 2 years in grad school. Perfect weather (even with the June gloom).

My only problems with CA are: very expensive, high taxes, and cold Pacific (I needed a short wetsuit - yes, I am a wimp about it now!)

So true. To all three. Only time I go in the water is the beginning of September, when it's usually warmest.

Andy, ever see the movie L.A. Story? Steve Martin plays a weatherman in L.A. and decides to pre-tape the weekend report so he can do something else. Things go wrong. The movie is pretty funny to those who know SoCal culture.

I forgot about that movie!

I love the scene where the group gives their coffee orders to the waiter, the part where he drives to his girlfriends' house (next door) and the name of the resort; Pollo Del Mar!
