Favorite Halloween Treat

Post by Demonic Duck » Wed Sep 26, 2012 10:02 am

I was wondering what everyone's favorite Halloween treat is? A particular seasonal candy, a standard candy bar that was/is your favorite to get ToTing, a special meal always prepared? As a sucker for chocolate and peanut butter I always look forward to the Reese's peanut butter cups shaped like pumpkins. Also anything and everything flavored like pumpkin(mmm pumpkin spice lattes)

Well, I have a few foods that are traditional for me on Halloween, so I am going to list my favorites in sub catagories.

Favorite treat: Affy Tapple with crushed peanuts.

Favorite ToT candy: Snickers & Butterfingers

Favorite meal: Hot dogs (Oscar Meyer or Best Kosher) roasted in my fire place

Favorite Halloween Beverage: ICE COLD apple cyder. Most like it warmed up, but I prefer it cold.

After a night spent wandering the streets for TOT, I like to return to hot spiced cider, popcorn, roasted pumpkin seeds, and Hershey's kisses. Caramel apples are also good, or sliced apples in caramel dip. Then curl up and watch a good Halloween movie.

I don't have one traditional Halloween meal. Over the years my priority has always been to make it quick, so I can hit the streets myself, or hand out the candy to the earliest TOTers. But a crock-pot supper like the one I made last weekend, Octoberfest pork roast, would be terrific. (Recipe in the most recent Taste of Home Halloween magazine--a three-lb. pork loin roast and one-lb. Kielbasa sausage, cut up, both on a bed of small red potatoes, sliced Granny Smith apples, and drained sauerkraut. Seasoned with caraway seeds, salt and pepper. Yum!)

I guess you could leave the sauerkraut out, but we thought that really made the dish. It is pretty rich with the two meats, and having the tang of the kraut & the Granny Smiths really cuts that.

Maybe, if you dislike kraut, you could substitute apple cider vinegar? You would have to come up with another vegetable, though, or maybe use more apples (the recipe calls for only two).

I'm sure my wife and I can come up with an acceptable substitution.

Every year, starting on October 1st, I fill the candy bowls with candy corn and peanut M&Ms. I also start visiting iHop for their pumpkin pancakes. I buy peanut butter cups, kitt-katts, and chocolate covered almonds for my personal consumption. The kids get the yucky stuff. I guess I can add Pumpkinhead beer to one of my favorite seasonal treats?

Murf, I'm going to crock pot a 3 pound pork loin, just as you did, only instead of doing it German style, I'm going to do it Hawiin style, with pineapple. Did you slice the roast up or leave it whole?

Mike that sounds wonderful!!

Murf I like yours too except for the Sauerkraut, I'm not a big German food kinda girl & with my last name you would think I would love it!!

We usually order pizza, then get all our Halloween Movies out an ready, I usually make Carmel apples and popcorn balls for that night too.

Our favorite candy is Paydays, Heaths, Reeses and M & M's. We usually pass them out on Halloween, and we eat whats left, with that being said, we usually only get 3 to 5 Trick or Treaters.

There are so few fans of Heath bars it's good to find another Witchy! I do love caramel apples also. This thread is making me hungry even though I just finished lunch.

Heath bars and PayDays??? I didn't even think you could get those out side the state of Illinois, but I do love them both. They aren't my favorite ToT candy, but I do enjoy a Heath bar, or a Payday once in a while. I also like Skor bars, too. They're just like a Heath bar, only a little thinner.

As for my pork roast, the crock pot or the oven is the only way I've ever been able to cook it successfully. Every time I tried pork on the barbecue, it came out unedibly dry. I also thought about gettign a boneless fresh ham, and doing it in the Nesco on slow cook, with pineapple.

Heath bars definitely aren't as popular as the other candy bars but you can get them. BTW Heath bar/toffee is GREAT in ice cream. I've never heard of a Skor bar I'll look around for them.

Never mind after a quick websearch I have seen Skor bars before but never looked that closely at them so I wasn't sure what they were. I'll pick one up next time I get that chocolate craving that you can only ignore for so long.
