Dia de los Muertos - 2011
Now for something different.
Here are some pictures I took during the celebration in Old Town San Diego. I
didn't have much luck getting anything on the 2nd because it was so crowded.
Click on any picture to go to the original, full-size picture. Feel free to download
them and use them as you wish.
The images below are from the ofrenda at the stage in Fiesta de Reyes.
The kids below performed a traditional Mexican dance on the stage Tuesday
night. I shot a short video of them in action.
The ladies below were kind enough to pose for pictures.
The pictures below are at the El Campo Santo Cemetery. Interesting story, if
you ever visit there look on the sidewalk and in the street, you'll see brass
markers. These are the location of graves that were left in place when the
town grew up around the graveyard. No wonder that place is so haunted.
Imagine trying to sleep with cars running atop you. They had a procession
from the state park to the cemetery on the 2nd but I got there too late to
catch it.
So sad. A little girl's grave. It sure got a lot of attention, people kept lighting
the candles. I tried to get a picture at night except the attendants kept blowing
them out. Click here to read the sign at the grave.
The public ofrenda. Anyone who lost a loved one could write their name on a
stick, light a candle, and leave a note. This was very popular.
Couldn't get back far enough to get a picture of the whole thing at night. Too
many people.
One of the grave sites at night.
Walking back to the park I snapped a shot of the Whaley House, considered
one of the most haunted houses in the country. I love the actual gaslamp. I
talked to one of the docents. He said they were very busy on Halloween night
and that a couple people claimed to have experienced something.
The ofrenda at the Whaley House.
At night...
This little lady was in the Whaley ofrenda.
A couple more ofrendas I spotted on the way back to the park. You can learn a
lot about the life of a person from these things.
At night...
I asked this lady out but she wouldn't answer. My type of girl. Grrrowl!
If you saw the Ghost Adventures the other day that took place in San Diego,
this was in the bar where Zak was drinking the shots.
The entrance to the Old Town Market place.
At night...
This was inside the market area.
Some of the cool stuff you can buy in the stores around Old Town.
Someone should get this for Mac for the next Grim Reaper Exchange. It's
nicer than those plaid ones he wears.

Murf, according to Wikipedia, countries with a large Roman Catholic population celebrate some sort of Day of the Dead, though I doubt any get as elaborate as the Mexican celebration. A lot of Native American influence. I was just thinking if you have any communities near you with populations from these countries you may be able to get a small taste of what it's like. I noticed there were a heck of a lot of tourists in Old Town so it looks like people travel to join in on these festivities. I saw license plates all the way from Maine.
Lilith, I was so bummed I coudn't find anyone selling sugar skulls. I wanted to bring one home to my roommate. I know they were available because they were doing skull making demonstrations all over the place but I kept missing them. Mmmmm.... sugar skull....

We have a lot of Hispanic immigrants in middle TN these days, but I am unaware that any of them is putting on a celebration like this.
