Witches

And now, finally, how does everyone like their witches? We had a bit of a discussion about witchcraft, and we have a lovely friend named Witchy, but when it comes to movies, do you prefer your witches to look or behave a certain way? Should they use wands or do they even need them? Make potions? Fly on brooms? Be easily identifiable or look just like everyone else? In my opinion, there are not a lot of good witch movies out there because I think that they are just really tricky to get right. My two favorites are Hocus Pocus and Suspiria--two very different portrayals of the witch.

I love Hocus Pocus! It's hard to beat that film for a fun Halloween comedy.
I also enjoy the seductive witch. I didn't watch Charmed very often--I believe it was on opposite something my husband preferred--but I think that was an enjoyable portrayal of pretty, young witches.
And who doesn't love Samantha?
I used to watch the silly soap opera Passions, largely because it had a witch and other supernatural characters. I took it mostly as a comedy, too, and I very much enjoyed Juliet Mills as Tabitha.
The Broadway musical Wicked is obviously a very enjoyable portrayal of witches. Then, of course, there are those kids at Hogwarts. . . .
Probably my first exposure to a witch in film was the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. She is a classic example of the crone, I guess, although the actress who played her really wasn't very old at the time.
Oh, have you all seen the film Beowulf? It is CGI, but the characters are very lifelike and based on recognizable actors. Angelina Jolie plays Grendel's mother and, unlike the original poem, she is re-imagined as a supreme seductress. She is both seductive and threatening, and I love her portrayal of that character. Almost the female embodiment of that allure-cum-danger we were talking about in the Dracula thread--though she is not a vampire. Definitely more of a sorceress, or some unknown entity entirely.

Charmed is a great portrayal. So are the witches in Practical Magic and Witches of Eastwick.
I like the Hocus Pocus witches, too!

It depends for me...in the movies I like the Witches to be more of the Sexy type but also have their devious and power hungry side...a wolf in sheeps clothing so to speak.
Although I enjoy the pics and artwork of the witches I have seen on film there really hasn't been too many good portrayals of Witches. The best movie I saw was the Blair Witch Project and there was no witch seen in the movie.
On TV, Charmed was my favorite...those sisters are gorgeous and rock!!
Hocus Pocus has to be the best Witches movie with witches in it....that is my favorite.

I like the Sanderson sisters the best too. But I think the Harry Potter witches and wizards are the most impressive and cast the coolest spells

I wonder, had the Sanderson sisters actually been able to carry out their plans and suck the lives out of all the children in Salem, would Winnie's beauty include better teeth? Like how many children would it have taken to get rid of her buck teeth?

Love her voice and accent! It's exaclty what I'd expect an elder witch to look and sound like. Love her!
