OCTOBER 2017

Post by Pumpkin_Man » Thu Nov 04, 2010 10:01 am

Hi Folks:

I know that it's 7 years away, but this kind of news just won't keep, and I was thinking that we should do something special, like an in-person gathering at a haunted place or something of that nature. With 7 years to play with, it may be possible for some of us to travel.

As I stated in other threads, October of 2017 is going to be a very special October in deed, and here's the reason why.

Eery year, I go through the calender to see how many months, that the 13th falls on a Friday. I call it "Little Halloween," and it seems that a lot of you have decided to join me in the observance or even the celebration of "Little Halloween" every Friday the 13th. Well, here's the rub, and it only happens once every 11 years. The last time it happened was in 2006. Then ext will be 2017. October 13th is going to be on a Friday. Talk about a fabulous Trick or Treat. Tha's right, we have a "Little Halloween" within the regular Halloween season that year, and I would like to propose that we make plans, tentative though they may be, to have an in-person gathering at a place like the Bartonville Insane Asylum or some other such place. If that doesn't 'tickle your fancy,' maybe we could meet in Salem Mass, or Sleepy Hollow. If we all start saving our extra coins, we may be able to pull it off. We would stay at a local haunted 'bed & breakfast," or something, and have a party on the 13th of some sort.

Let me know what you all think of the idea. I know that even if we don't do anything in person, we should make 2017 as special a Halloween as we can.

Mike

I wouldn't be able to tell until then if I could afford to go. Although I'm not much for traveling. I guess it comes from having to do too much commuting.

Did you happen to check the moon phase for that date?

No, I did not check the moon phase. Outlook doesn't display it, but I just thought it would be neat. Hopefully we can do some kind of a "field trip," but if we cant, we should do something special. Again, we have 7 years to play with, and I'm open to suggestions. The "Field Trip" was just one idea that I thought I would throw out and see how people react to it. It doesn't necessarily have to be a field trip. We can each do something indiidualy and reprot on it, or we can all agree to screen a certain flick, at the same time on Fricay October 13th in 2017, or we can do a comgination of all of the above. I know that travel is hard for a lot of people, but it would really be a shame if we let a wonderful 'trick or treat' like that pass us by without doing anytinng at all. Here is a list of suggestions that I thought of off the top of my head. Perhaps some of you can come up with a few of your own.

Field trip to an actual haunted place (i.e. Bartonville Insane Asylum, or Winchester House)

Field trip to Salem Mass and party at a haunted 'bed & breakfast'

Field trip to Sleepy Hollow, and party on that haunted bridge where Icabard Krane supposedly met up with the headless horseman

Individual field trips to haunted places and attractins, and then written repotrs after words. (I'll also post pictures)

"Secret Cinema" agreement. We can all agree on a movie or several movies to screen on Fridy the 13th. To make it more interesting, we can screen them all at the exact same time. sort of being together in spirit.

We can have a "Two Halloween Year" photo or art contest, but I don't know how we cold determine the winner.

A special "Great Pumpkin" or "Grim Reaper" gift exchange like we did this year, only with a different "twist" to it.

We can play a little cyber game of "Truth or Dare." (obviously there would have to be limitations. You couldn't dare some one to do something highly illegal or dangerous) We could dare or challenge each other to do something that we allways wanted to do, but never did out of fear. Sort of a "conquer your Fear Friday the 13th." Or something you never did on Friday the 13th.

Just a few thoughts. Perhaps some of you might have some better ideas. Don't be shy. Like I said, we have 7 years to plan this out.

Salem in October? No way. I've heard how crowded it gets... and prices go up. When I stayed at the Hawthorne in early September 2005, it cost $180 a night for a room... granted, they do have a pretty kicking Halloween costume party, so I've heard.

I like the get-together idea... but I suggest choosing somewhere more centralized that's not quite as hyped-up as Salem. It'd help spread the travel costs fairly evenly (even if I'd have 7 years to save... a lot can happen in 7 years).... because, for me and my husband, it'd cost +$2000 for a trip "back east"-- hubby would want to go to Baltimore, MD... and I'd want to visit a friend in CT (It's cheap to fly into CT so I'd start there)... and I'd want to take hubby to Gettysburg...

Looks like the interest is there, Mike. I'd say the first step would be to figure out who wants to go and which states people are coming from... and then have us suggest a centralized location... and then choose one.... or have two parties, one on each coast.

As far as my location goes... I'm in S. Arizona. Anything east is plausible, but I'd prefer something more in my region. S. Cal, Texas... etc. Though, depending on the location back east, I wouldn't mind taking a trip out there... in 7 years, I hope to have more money and PTO at work! Heheh.

I'm in Illinois, but am willing to travel. I like your idea f having two trips, one for the Western people and one for the Eastern. I agree that Salem would be crowded in October, and we would probably have to make reservatins far in advance.

If we do travel to a more centralized locality, it should be some place with a haunted history or scary stories about it. A visit to a haunted house would be nice. Somethinf along those lines. I only suggested Salem Mass and Sleepy Hallow because of the stories about those places.

Thanks for posting this cool thread here, Mike! :D I really did do appreciate that, and I really don't know right now because 7 years is pretty long time from now.... don't know if I will be alive or dead. But I hope to be around here in 2017. :D

That is a really great idea Mike!
Reminds me of the second Blair Witch Project movie, strangers from the internet go on a roadtrip to a haunted site. :)
I'm not really tied down here, if this happens I will go anywhere. (except maybe Africa and reallly far away places)

Like I said, to keep it fair, we should probably go to a place that is more centraly located, or have two seperate trips, one East and one West.

We really should visit an authenticaly haunted place, because it's the Halloween season, it will be Friday the 13th, and this is a Halloween gathering.

We also don't necessarily have to stick to one place either. If it turns out to be too difficult for most people to meet in a central spot, we could all go to a haunted place closest to our homes, and then write a report and compare notes. The trips would have to be made on Friday October 13th, in order to make it "authentic," but that could work, too.

This sounds awesome. I'd love to travel up north to some famous haunted locations, but I doubt I'll still be part of this forum by then. Maybe something a little sooner?

There's actually tons of haunted places here in Texas, one off the top of my head is an old theater here in downtown San Antonio.
