The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hālgena mæssedæg, mass-day of all saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556.

But yea I know all about Ireland & the Celts. I love reading the history of it. I love the story of Stingy Jack - that's Irish.

I'ld love to visit Ireland someday.

No, that wouldn't have happened. Like I said i'ld love to visit Ireland. The scenery looks amazing to! One of my friend's mum is Irish & she's a blast!

Anyway believe it or not, I get called "anti-English" quite often! Long story, but I don't agree with certain things Englishmen have done in the past.

Oh & also that after World Cup 2010, I have completely given up on the England national football (soccer for you guys ) side & have not watched them since! I also gave my shirt away!

I was in Germany many years ago (like, 31 years ago), in May, and I saw decorated Maypoles in the Rhine River Valley. I don't know if the people had continued to celebrate that folk custom, or if it was a modern revival of an old tradition. But, yeah, you can still find that stuff here and there.

I didn't see the ceremony, just the decorated poles. I wasn't even there on May Day, but a bit later in the month.

My son lived in southern Germany in 2010. I'll have to ask him if he saw anything like that.

BTW, I take a magazine called German Life (as some of our family's ancestry comes from there), and they have an article this month about a werewolf legend in some town or other. I'll have to find it and see if I can scan it in.
