Mike, what a great story! That made me laugh. My husband teaches high school, my daughter is in high school right now, and both my sons were in band, so I still feel pretty connected to that venue. I have no doubt the band director was amused and probably even flattered that you wrote about him.

Okay. How should I put this?

Miami has a very large gay community and they love Halloween. So back when I was a cop down there, I got an unknown distress call at a big apartment complex. This was the night of October 29th and when I get there it is obvious that a big Halloween party is in full swing.

There is an ambulance and fire truck there and being the first officer on scene, I make my way into the apartment and see just about every kind of costume you can imagine and probably a few you couldn't.

Seems this was a big Halloween hoop to do and the paramedics, firefighters and yours truly were the only straight guys in the joint.

They had been playing a game. I was told that it was their version of "bobbing for apples" and they had put about a dozen of these jack-o-lantern stress relief balls (the kind you squeeze with your hand as a stress release toy)into a tub of water. I'm guessing the jack-o-lanterns were a little bit smaller than the size of a baseball.

Their idea of bobbing was NOT done with their mouths, but with ANOTHER part of their anatomy, and somehow the jack-o-lantern got sucked up into a place it shouldn't go, and so instead of taking him to a hospital, they called 911.

I never looked at a jack-o-lantern the same way ever again.

And now, neither will I...Oh the horror. I used to work for a company in which we did billing for Emergency Department doctors at the hospital. We saw the complete charts and I have read some real head shaking things as well. I am sure not as many as you though, Kolchak. And I am sure seeing it is much more unsettling than reading it.

Mine isn't quite as awkward as that. I've been called the Queen of Halloween at my office and really decorate my cubicle at Halloween. I've been doing this the entire time I've worked there, about 8 years.

One year, this woman who's a work friend of mine came over to my desk, which was brimming with Happy Halloween signs, jack-o-lanterns, ghosts and other assorted Halloween decorations and announces to me that she doesn't celebrate Halloween. And I said, well that's cool but I do. She then explained to me why she doesn't celebrate Halloween, that's it just celebrates darkness, death, and evil. I replied that was her opinion and and that I disagreed. She said a few more things about how it seemed odd to her that I would like something so dark. To which I replied it's a great big wonderful world and there's room in it for everybody.

Now, what made this awkward was one, she was a friend of mine. Not my inner circle but still a friend. I couldn't figure out why she found it strange I liked Halloween. It's not like it was a state secret. The other thing that made it awkward was, why was she telling me this? Was she trying to explain the error of my ways? That I'd somehow lived my entire life without hearing this? Hoping I would, I don't know, recant my love of Halloween? I have no idea. Over the past few years, she has softened and decided if I like Halloween it must not be a giant ball of evil, but that conversation was one of the more surreal ones I've had.
We're the farmer's scarecrows
We scare away the birds,
We keep the farmer's corn safe
Without any words.
But when Halloween comes
We jump out of the ground
And we scare the boys and girls
When they come walking 'round.

It sorta sounds to me like she wanted to have a confrontation with you about Halloween. She wanted to express her opinion no matter what and you weren't going to prevent her from doing it by being polite about it.

Some people are just totally uncomfortable with Halloween. I know quite a few around here, including some friends. Most of them go to a fairly fundamentalist church, which is cool, too. I mean, I like the fundamentalists in many ways. I just part company with them about Halloween. (These were the same people who wouldn't let their kids read Harry Potter, you know.) They are told at church that it is the Devil's holiday and celebrates evil. That is all they can see in it.

I have also known a smattering of people, mostly much older ones, who think Halloween is a selfish holiday that is only about seeing how much candy you can grab. I think these are people who didn't celebrate Halloween as children, or did so only a little, and never really "got" it.

Yeah it is about the candy for a lot of kids but it's still a great way for parents to push their kid's imagination and creativity. Me? According to my buddy's wife, I'm going to burn in the lake of fire because of my love of Halloween. So I got that going for me.

Nevermore, of course you are going to burn in the lake of fire. But not for your love of Halloween though.

Just swim over to my boat NeverMore. I'll take you fishing, Lake of Fire skiing and SCUBA diving. You haven't BEEN diving until you've gone diving in Lake of Fire!

There are always people out there who think they know what's best and right for you and I. Nine times out of ten, THEIR lives are so screwed up, they should be in a rubber room or on Jerry Springer.

Sheesh!!! Post one controversial picture...

Fishing in the lake of fire? Way to turn a negative into a positive Kolchak.

Love the stories! Mine isn't so much awkward, but we have a new neighbor who just moved in a few months ago...CRAZY haunt people...She says, "it isn't Halloween unless I make little children cry"...hahaha
So we were comparing notes (she saw the last two displays of ours, the castle, and last years Arabian nights) and as we were talking..she was asking if we had any left over body parts that we might not be using, I said yes..let me check..I know we have some hands, and maybe some arms, and I think a few feet....
I looked at her and said "ya know, we are the only two people in the world having this exact conversation right now" hahaha

Murf, the band master was very understanding, and judging by his initial reaction, he was not suprised at all. One of the faculty members who lived in the same neighborhood as he did was allways kidding him around about his cats. I more or less overheard some of that interaction, and wrote my story accordingly. It was fun, though a bit awkward.

Kolchak, I don't think I will stop laughing for a month! I bet if 'Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater' was gay, he would have had field day at that party. (narf narf)
