Jack, have you read the original short story Sleepy Hollow? If you have, you might appreciate the Disney cartoon version even more. It gets the tone right. The Washington Irving story is more gently comic and nostalgic than scary. It has a few eerie moments with the Headless Horseman.

I have an old VHS tape of that Disney version. I haven't seen it on DVD. Perhaps it came out and I missed it.

As for the song in the cartoon, The Legend Of Sleepy Hallow, I am a Bing Crosby fan but I think the best version was recorded by Kay Starr, which you can also find on Amazon as a download, http://www.amazon.com/Headless-Horseman/dp/B000SAHA9Q

No, Spooky, haven't even heard of that movie! But I can imagine it might be fun.

Thanks for the link, Andy! That's the one. The VHS tape combined those two cartoons as well.

Like Mike and many others, my husband and I typically watch "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" about 7 or 8 times in Oct. I also watch Disney's "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" several times, which now comes with the cartoon "Lonesome Ghosts" but not the Donald Duck classic "Trick or Treat" - it came with both on VHS in the 80's. Because Donald Duck's "Trick or Treat" is probably my favorite Halloween cartoon (I know - I feel like I'm throwing my old friend Charlie Brown under the bus here), I recently had to hunt it down and purchase Disney's "The Black Cauldron" just because "Trick or Treat" is included on the disc. But atleast now I have it. If you haven't seen DD's Trick or Treat cartoon check it out - serious Halloween atmosphere!

Now I'm just waiting for them to release "The Halloween that Almost Wasn't" on DVD.

I think my favorite Hallowen cartoon AND my favorite Charlie Brown cartoon is "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown." Some of the newer Halloween movies I liked were "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Monster House."

I looked high and low for the Disney version of "The Legend of Sleepy Hallow," though and had no luck at all. But I do have a couple of other versions of that story that are both good.

Nightmare before Christmas is a classic, I think. I have gotten tired of Tim Burton in the years since, but he was very fresh and at his eccentric best in that movie.

I also like the Hammer films. I always watch Hocus Pocus about 3-4 times leading up to Halloween especially with the kids. Also, Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin. I also watch some of the Disney Halloween movies with the kids too such as "Halloweentown", "Little Vampire", "Under Wraps", "Boy Who Cried Werewolf", and a bunch of the Scooby Doo movies. They are fun to watch with kids. Halloween night I will watch the original Halloween and Blair Witch Project and probably Trick R Treat. There are probably a bunch of movies I am forgetting to mention here but I also enjoy the Roseanne and Home Improvement Halloween episodes as well...they are great.
I thought I was the only one who still liked Roseanne! I always love those Halloween episodes.

I love those Roseanne specials, too, Hallowed Eve! Wonder if she'll do anything special for Halloween on her new show? That would be cool! We'll have to keep our eye out just in case :D

When I think of Halloween episodes of main stream tv shows, the two that come to my mind was the Halloween episode of the late 70s and early 80s tv series "CHiPS," (that was the show about the California motorcycle cops) and the Halloween episode of the 1990s tv show "Alien Nation." That was about the Tantinese "new comers" who where originaly bread by some alien life form to be slaves. Their slave ship crashed landed on the West Coast.

In the "CHiPs" episode, there was a bery beautiful Morticia look alike running around using mace to rob grocery stores. In the "Alien Nation" episode, the Tantanese detective's daughter drew the signature of the "Kling Sot Sune" (overseer) on her wrist as a Halloween costume. Her "new comer" father freaked out.

I too LOVED Roseanne and her Halloween episodes. (I don't get all the hate for that show, but to each his own I guess).

Night Court also used to have Halloween episodes. I remember one year taping all the Halloween specials off tv when we used to do that (Bugs Bunny, Peanuts, Disney's Legend of Sleepy Hollow, etc) and I'd taped that year's Roseanne and Night Court episodes as well.

DIdn't 7th Heaven used to have Halloween episodes as well? I didn't watch that show but I remember tuning in to a show just for special creepy Halloween episodes a couple years and for some reason I think it was 7th Heaven.
