Three Simple Words!

For the third day on Johnson's Farm, I cleared the road of saplings, rocks, grass and fallen trees for the new owner. This morning though would be unlike any other work day before. As I pushed the wheel barrow up the drive way, I saw her.

She was a long brown haired beauty about 25 years old with deep blue eyes, wearing a blue and white cotton dress swaying as she walked towards me. As she approached, she smiled and waved and I waved back. She called out to me and said her name was Emily in a soft voice.

I replied, "My name is Raymond" and she softly whispered, "Could you stop for just a little while and talk with me? I was born on this old farm and I know it like the back of my hand." That got my curiosity going because the realtor told me no one lived here

But not for over twenty years, she said. It was a hot day and I needed to take a break anyways, so I smiled and said, "Ok." We made small talk for a few minutes and then she whispered, "Let's take a walk." She spoke of many things and I would smile and nod as I got to know her better.

A few more minutes passed and then I saw a small white picket fence up ahead. Within it was a single pale white head stone and I glanced at the words written on it. There were three simple words written and as I read them, my smile began to fade. The date was May 6, 1981 as I read three simple words, ‘My Beloved Emily'.

It was then that I turned to Emily and I saw tears flowing down her cheeks as she spoke. "I'm sorry for bothering you Raymond; I just was lonely and wanted to talk with you." With reluctance and hesitation I felt her pull her hand away and take a few steps back. Once more, her soft voice whispered, "I'm sorry" and I watched her slowly vanish.

That’s funny, a similar thing happened to me with a girl called Emily! We met while I was out for a walk. We got chatting as we walked along and ended up at a pub. We found a quiet table and ordered drinks. Things were going great and so the drinks flowed along with the conversation. It was then at around the midnight, I made my excuses and paid a visit. It was on my return, she was nowhere to be found! She had completely vanished, leaving me with only the memories and the bill!
