Re: Inflatables - Good decoration or Bad?
I have a really cute 4' inflatable mummy. There's a street behind my home as well as in front. I put cute in the back and scary out front. I think you can mix the two as long as there's some separation.

Never mind the cute mummy. I have a dog that likes to chew cords and well, you can guess the rest. I thought he'd learned his lesson after chewing through the cord to the vacuum cleaner while I was vacuuming (just a slight mouth burn and quite a scare) but apparently not.

Re: Inflatables - Good decoration or Bad?
I must confess, I believe inflatables are a tool of the lazy and uninspired. I personally can't stand them, and I have yet to see a good one. I take pride each year in building my own props and decorating the yard for at least a month before the big day. People that take five minutes to toss an inflatable on their lawn and flip a switch, well, at least their awknowledging the day.
That being said, I have seen some great integrations of inflatables into fun yard haunts. One that I really liked was a 6ft inflatable pumpkin that was used as the balloon portion of a hot air balloon that "floated" above the yard and had a basket with two or three 5ft skeletons onboard. That was pretty creative and took the inflatable to the next level.
I also saw a haunt a few years ago where a skeleton army (much in the style of Ray Harryhausen) was attacking an inflatable "haunted house". That was cute because, the way I saw it, the well-designed yard haunt was attaching something that obviously didn't belong. I still chuckle at that one.
Anyway, inflatables = BAD. Creative, home-built yard haunt = GOOD.

Re: Inflatables - Good decoration or Bad?
Inflatable decorations remind me of the ones that car dealorships use when they're having a sale or something. Dempsy Dodge in Dwight Illinois had an inflatable dinasour on their front lawn for the entire Summer one year. I guess huge inflatable decorations are fine if you want to sell cars, but they are not part of my Halloween tradition. Nor are they part of my Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, St. Patricks Day, Vallentines Day etc, etc, etc, tradition, either. And believe it or not, I've seen 6 foot and 8 f0ot turkeys, shamrocks, hearts, Santa Clauses, you name it.
I agree. They look too much like advertising rather then a decoration.

I guess they are better than nothing, but I would much prefer other kinds of decorations.

Re: Inflatables - Good decoration or Bad?
Well I have a black cat inflatable that I look forward to putting out.
It's just a small one, and personally I like the inflatables. Just as long as they don't get punctured.
My mom has one with a skeleton coming out of a grave, and I thought it was really cool.

This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,
A ghost tried to approach me and got leery.
Ask him a question and he vanished in a second...

Inflatable decorations are also prim targets for pranksters with pocket knives who like nothing better then to slash a big hole in some one's giant sized pumpkin, skeloton or other decoration.

I've had the good fortune to not be the victim of vandals. I think that's the one good thing about living at the end of a cul-de-sac. Not a lot of "drive by"s.

Well, if I catch anyone vandalizing MY stuff...they'll regret it. Because I've got a nice little super soaker that I'm dying to try out.

Re: Inflatables - Good decoration or Bad?
I kind of changed my mind about inflatables.
There is a house in my town that puts up inflatables in the yard for Christmas. I think it looks great. And most of the time I think inflatables look tacky, but this house looks awesome! I think some inflatables look good. Others look tacky.

Re: Inflatables - Good decoration or Bad?
I think it just depends on how they are integrated.
Perhaps I could do as TK suggested, and do something to make my inflatable stand out, not just put it up. Granted, the first time I use it that's probably what I'll do. I could perhaps make it the center piece of my display.
And granted, this is when I get my own place...
Here's an example of what it looks like

This one isn't mine, but I believe that's the same one that I have...whereever I put the darn thing. I think it's in storage somewhere still in the box.
