Top Mexican drug lord killed in clash with army

Post by iHaunt » Sun Aug 01, 2010 11:40 pm

One of the top three leaders of Mexico's most powerful drug cartel died in a gunfight with soldiers Thursday, ending the long run of a mysterious capo considered a founder of the country's massive methamphetamine trade.

The death of Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel near the city of Guadalajara is the biggest strike yet against the Sinaloa cartel led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman - Mexico's top drug lord, since President Felipe Calderon launched a military offensive against drug traffickers in late 2006.

Along the U.S. - Mexico border, life continued as before, with officials sending back people who were captured while attempting to cross. According to the FBI, which offered a $5 million reward for the 56-year-old Coronel, he was believed to be "the forerunner in producing massive amounts of methamphetamine in clandestine laboratories in Mexico, then smuggling it into the U.S."

General Edgar Luis Villegas said an army raid was closing in one of Coronel's safehouses in an upscale suburb of the western city of Guadalajara, when the drug lord opened fire on soldiers.
Well, that's very sad news! :(

Funny stuff.

Even better:
Drug Cartels put out a hit on Sheriff Joe Arpiao

http://azstarnet.com/news/local/border/ ... 002e0.html
Arpaio: Office investigating death threat

PHOENIX - Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio says his office is investigating a report that there is a $1 million bounty on his head.

Arpaio - the sheriff of Maricopa County where Phoenix is located - says it's not unusual for him to receive death threats as sheriff and an outspoken advocate of immigration enforcement.

He says the threats do not deter him from his work.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Lisa Allen says the threat was relayed by two sources. The FBI sent the sheriff information it had received about a death threat and someone called KSAZ-TV, the Fox News station in Phoenix, reporting the threat was from a Mexican drug cartel.

Allen says they don't know if the threat actually came from a drug cartel. They do believe the threat was made via a disposable cell phone in Mexico.
... the article fails to mention the $1000 bonus for signing up to be a part of the cartel. *snerk*

I have a lot of respect for that guy, he enforces the law to hell with the politicians!

When I was doing my time there in Phoenix I talked to some co-workers who spent some time in the tent city and they said they NEVER wanted to go back there, so he must be doing something right, and ya gotta love that he went out and did a work-place illegal immigrant raid the day after SB-1070 was held up by that Judge (I wonder if Eric Holder called that judge at some point before she made her decision)
