Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

I've tried moonshine once, and I've never seen it made.
That is strong! :o

My parents, after they were married, moved from D.C. to central West Virginia as a sort of hippie "back to nature" thing. From what I hear, Daddy would brew dark beer (a half pint of which, legend goes, would leave you semi-conscious) and trade it with other mountain men for 'shine and locally grown... ahem.... herbs.

Once, a neighbor gave them a present for dinner. It was a tupperware container with a skinned and cleaned squirrel.

They also had a neighbor, Hubert Foster, who's cat Bum Bum made the front page of the local newspaper after Hubert taught it to use the toilet. The headline, Mummy tells me, complete with photo of cat on the cr@pper, was "Bum Bum is no Dumb Dumb".
