The Arts

Post by DemonSlayerMau » Wed Sep 03, 2008 5:02 pm

I noticed there was a section in this message board for Halloween writing, but I didn't see anything for drawings, and other art forms.
With the mods and admin's permission, I'd like to make this a visual art medium's thread, and I'm putting it in here because it doesn't necessarily have to be Halloween related (though it can be if you want. :) )
The sky's the limit as far as what art mediums you'd like to emphasize, whether it's drawing, writing, comics or whatever, and the discussion of such.
Here's some of my best art:

I actually have a project I'm working on called "The Stray" and it's about a girl named Phoebe Katzen who obtains cat powers from the dna of every cat in the world by accident in a military genetic lab which works to design super soldiers with animal dna.
Her armor uses alien nanite technology with conforms and works with her body and feline reflexes.
She has the combined strength of every existing cat, can run in short bursts the same speed as a cheetah, and she can talk to cats and has feline claws, reflexes, and senses.

Here's a collection of drawings related to the Stray Project :)

(FYI I was originally going to call her Felinox...but scrapped the name as it seemed to have little to nothing to do with her feline aspects. Also, please don't get her confused with cat woman...Phoebe wouldn't be too happy with you if you did :p)
This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,

Your drawings look good. Your characters are very inventive, and their costumes are fantastic! You do need to work on your perspective when drawing buildings. Your art looks good, but there are areas for improvement.

I can recommend this book for improving perspective:
Perspective! For Comic Book Artists: How to Achieve a Professional Look in Your Artwork by David Chelsea

I've also noticed that you're really good at drawing front views of characters, but you need a little more practice drawing in three-quarters view and in some of the more dynamic poses. Learning a little anatomy will help make your characters more dynamic... and practice, practice, practice with those other views. =)

It also looks like you rely a lot on filters and blending options to add effects when colouring. I'm assuming you use a program like Photoshop to colour your artwork. There are some great photoshop tutorials that can be found here:

I really like the 1-2 comic-book style drawings. Your imaginative characters are interesting. How did you get the idea for them?

What exactly do you mean by "front view" anyway? You mean the "mug shot" or the "side shot" view? o.o

There are six different views that I'm aware of when drawing-- front, side, back, top, bottom and three-quarters (though, I'm certain there are other views that describe a full, half, and head-view of a figure too, I don't know what those terms are exactly).

Front view (or "mug shot", as you call it) is looking directly at the character's front. You cannot see anything on the sides of the character. This view, in general (as in when your character is just standing somewhere), makes your characters look a little flat, but it's a good place to start.

Side view is looking directly at the character's side (either left or right). You cannot see anything but the side of the character. This view, in general, makes your characters look a little flat, but it's a good place to start. This view also poses a challenge for most people, when it comes to drawing the eyes... they give them the "Egyptian Eyes" instead of what's better described as a greater/less than symbol with a dome over the opening.

Back view is looking directly at the character's back.

Top... you see the top of the character

Bottom, you see the bottom of the character...

Three-quarter's view (in the least strict sense) is when you see a combination of two (or more) different views-- when the character isn't directly facing forward, backwards, or to the side. This view is more dynamic and brings more depth to drawings. Usually, it's a front and a side view. In the case of Spiderman, you often see him with a top or bottom view with the front and side views as he swings through the streets.
