Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974)

Post by OktoberFest » Wed Sep 23, 2009 2:11 pm

A creepy sounding killer!

What most don't realize is that Black Christmas came out before the original Friday The 13th, and Carpenter's Halloween. Halloween was widely recognized as setting the path for terror-in-the-home, for the mainstreams, where the killer comes into your own private space. Something that hadn't been done before.... except in Black Christmas. I wonder if Carpenter took inspiration from this.

yes, black christmas did come first but John took his inspiration from the novel, where Michael's character is the Shape!

look up the DVD 25 Years of Halloween. its a great source of info about the movies :)
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

I really liked Black Christmas the classic the best than the remake! :D

And, not so sure if John Carpenter did copy some scenes from Black Christmas to add something different to his own "Halloween"movie. :?

Black Christmas was the first of its kind but sort of flew under the radar really compared to J.C.'s HALLOWEEN. Although there are a few similarities in the movies (mostly just the idea of "i'm coming into YOUR home to get you") as far as actual scenes and killings are concerned, characters as well, it was all based on the book! with a John Carpenter Hollywood spin on it.

I will see if I can find out about this information whether or not John Carpenter did copy it from Bob Clark's Black Christmas. I will post here when I find out anytime. ;)

Ok, I read this from Fright Exclusive Interview online.

Icons Of Terror: Sooo, was "Black Christmas" directly responsible for "Halloween"?

Bob Clark: No, that's not really true. The truth is John didn't copy "Black Christmas", he wrote a script, directed the script, did the casting. "Halloween" is his movieand besides the script came to him already titled anyway. He liked "Black Christmas" and may have been influenced by it, but in no way did John Carpenter copy the idea. Fifteen other people at that time had thought to do a movie called "Halloween" but the script came to John with that title on it.

That is all I can tell. ;)
