OK, so when you say or hear the term MONSTER movie, I think most people run through the list of usual suspects --- Dracula and Frankenstein, but also Godzilla.
However, there is very little about Godzilla that is really 'Halloween', ... still, the big lizard is a fundamental defintion of 'Monster' movie.
So, to savor Gojira's monster status despite its lack of Trick or Treat value, the final Saturday of September has become ...
BIG CRITTER SATURDAY
(Critter is a term in our circle for big, nasty monster)
Of course, Godzilla is simply the reason for the day, not the exclusive star.
Here is the schedule for Big Critter Saturday 2007 - The Unofficial Official Start to Halloween Month:
7:00 The Monster That Challenged the World (1957)
8:30 Rodan (1956)
10:00 Gorgo (1961)
11:30 Reptilicus (1962)
1:00 The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)
2:30 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957)
4:00 War of the Gargantuans (1966)
6:00 Dragonslayer (1981)
8:00 Jurassic Park (1994)
10:00 Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)
12:00 King Kong vs. Godzilla (1967)
2:00 Destroy All Monsters (1968)
4:00 Destroy All Planets (1968)
OK, when it comes down to the nitty gritty of the day, "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" and "20 Million Miles to Earth" are must-sees, and "Destroy All Monsters" ... but "Godzilla: Final Wars" has become a favorite. It's a day of mostly classic 'Monster' movies.
Naturally, I cheat by watching a more modern 'Big Critter' movie on the Friday night before: "Tremors"
And since October begins Monday, we are going to watch some of Hollywood's best non-classic style horror movies Sunday (sprinkled between and after football):
5:00 Jaws
7:00 Se7en
9:00 The Silence of the Lambs
11:00 The Dead Zone
Writing this because it's a perfect evening, overcast and raining, and watching "Dead Silence", which I'd been holding off for just such a day.
Enjoy
