For Love of the Munsters

Doc Strange's Halloween pics inspired me to start this thread.
I must say that the Munsters was one of the funniest Sitcoms of all time. Fred Gwynne was an absolute comedic genius. His funnyman played perfectly off of Grandpa Al Lewis' straight man. Although I'm sure Fred would cringe if he heard himself referred to as comedian. I understand his true love was for drama. But with that being said, I think it speaks volumes to his amazing talent as an actor. Infact, in the realm of comedy he played both sides of the coin very well. For example, take his performance as the straightman Judge in "My Cousin Vinny". HILARIOUS!
Fred Gwynne (1926- 2004) a Classic American Entertainer.

If you go back and watch the DVDs of the show you'll discover some interesting tidbits about the Munsters. Namely, at the beginning there was an element of social commentary with the show. Early in the first season the clearly white neighborhood was aghast at the site of "those" people moving in next door. Considering the climate of the day this wouldn't have been totally lost on the adult audience that might have been watching.
Also, the Munsters were a direct send up of the classic American sitcom by portraying a cohesive family unit that loved each other and were openly patriotic, but also classic monsters. And I find it interesting that unlike the Addams Family, whose characters were so deftly handled by new actors in the films, no new Munsters cast has ever come close to recapturing the magic of the original cast. Gwynne and Lewis were such a great team that no others can take those roles and make them their own.

I have always been a "Munsters kind of girl" The Adamas family was good too but didn't compare to the Munsters for me. I still watch it on TV Land. I always wanted a Wolfie....

Interesting observation Doc. I personally don't own the DVD, but I plan to get a copy. Like you, Winnie, I watch the episodes religously on TV Land.
You're right. One the funniest things about the Munsters is that they always viewed themselves as the model Middle Class American Family. Do you remember the episode when they were suppose to be pictured in a magazine, I don't recall the title, and the editors put a caption that they were the average American Family celebrating Halloween? When they are puzzled by this description, Grampa reasons that the magazine simply made an error and switched the captions with another " normal" looking family on a different page. Funny Stuff.

There are slot machines dedicated to the Munsters? That's so cool. In terms of casinos, I've only been to Atlantic City and there's nothing like that there.
