The consensus is that Constantine is expected to be the big hit of the new TV season. Remember the movie version with Keanu? Interesting thing is, they are skipping references to his smoking problem, an integral part of the movie and the comic book. They're also toning down his sexuality which probably isn't as big a deal. Not really as essential to the character, though it worked OK with Torchwood's Jack Harkness.

I wasn't too big on the movie and never knew the comic character was gay/bi/tri or what have you. It's one thing for something to be endemic for character portrayal and another just to be chic or hip or cool and appeal to the politically correct crowd who we already know live in a fantasy world of make believe.

I remember watching one of those Starship Trooper movies where in the future girls and boys are totally equal on the battlefield as well the playing field. The movie opens up with a girl playing some type of future football and knocks a guy who weighs over 200 pounds more than she does into the air. Sorry. Physics doesn't work that way. A 110 pound human regardless of gender cannot knock a 300 pound human flying with a shoulder block or forearm shiver. The 6 Million Dollar Woman notwithstanding.

I like how these people want it both ways. On the one hand they want a hero who fits into a certain demographic. Then the rest of us have to bend over(pun intended)and accept said behavior lest we be attacked by the Thought Police of MSNBC, CNN, New York Times , Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and the most left leaning paper in the US, my very own Atlanta Journal Constitution. (it does do a good job in wrapping fish though)

Yet, when its all said and done. The comic/show is ALL FAKE! It's all fantasy. Nothing about it is real. There are no vampires, werewolves or devils. The real monsters look like you and I. Why not do a comic based on that instead?

I have a very old album from a comedian of the late 50s and early 60s named Lenny Bruce. Bruce was controversial in his time and was arrested and convicted of obscenity. He died of a drug overdose in 1966. His obscenity conviction was pardoned by New York governor Pataki in 2003. By todays standards, Bruce was not dirty. By todays standards his album isn't really funny. But he is Lionized by todays comics for his stance on using dirty words.

I'm an ex-army ranger and paratrooper. One thing I know how to do is cuss. I do it frequently. Pimps, sailors, deep sea divers and pornogrephers turn pale when I start cussing.

But is cussing a blue streak really that important? I just don't see a persons sexual preference or his colorful vocabulary as being on par with finding a cure for cancer or ending hunger in the world.

Sorry. Looks like I climbed on my soapbox again. I'll get down now.
