Help me with colored flood lighting Please!!!

Post by shanda » Mon Sep 21, 2009 11:10 pm

I am wanting to use colored flood lighting on my house this year. I have looked everywhere and can not find them anywhere. I am short on time now and have no time to order. Does anyone have any ideas for tinting regular floods? I have thought about using some sort of colored plastic ( plastic notebook dividers) to cover or make a dome over.
I have considered paint. I don't want to set fire to my yard!!!

They only have to burn for my party. I am thinking 4 hours. I would like longer burn time.

I have found regular colored light bulbs, but I have a large 2 story house and am wanting to use 3 colors. I don't think they will be strong enough. Will they?

Please, Please, Please, any helpful advice would be more than welcome!!!

Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

Lowes will have red and green in the Christmas room, and other colors in the light bulb aisle. Depot should too. Walmart usually also has a few colors. If you can't find them at Lowes, grab one of the red-vesters and ask them; they may be side-stacked somewhere else in the store. Retailers are kooky like that. Keep in mind, though, that they use tons of electricity, and if you have about five or six, you can really hike the electric bill quickly.

A few years ago, I switched to the fluorescent party bulbs. The light isn't as bright as a floodlight, but they use 13 watts as opposed to, I think standard floodlights are 150 watts. You can use them in the same sockets as floodlights; just try to keep them dry, cause moisture can ruin them. They also come in orange, which is awesome! And they are far brighter than the standard party bulbs, which use 60 watts and throw off lots more heat.

I wouldn't recommend painting a standard floodlight, as they get very hot, and would likely ignite an oil-based paint, or melt a latex one. I tried a red sharpie one year, but it didn't make a very intense red, and faded fairly quickly (probably the heat again). Putting a plastic filter in front could also be tricky, because if it's too close, again, it could melt.

Good luck, and let us know what you come up with!

Just got back from The Depot. Blue, Red, Green and Yellow floods in the 100W range, 7 bucks ! They also have a ground socket with a metal spike in the electrical section. Weather resistant ! 5 bucks. 50ft. extension cords in green are about 10 bucks. Home Depot has NO Halloween stuff ! ! ! NONE ! ! ! In fact I was told October 5th will be the start of the Christmas season for them. Just freaking SAD ! Also, did two Walmarts and a Target. Almost nothing ! The seasonal sections are limited by size now. Don't even bother. They've removed the craft section as well. The only thing wal-mart is good for at this point is candy.
And bussiness is good !!!

wal mart was bought out by some one new nearly 3 years ago and his first project was to take out the fabric section, then the arts and crafts :) our wal mart nearly sold out of halloween stuff last year but still this year, hardly anything. we should begin a mass email movement to companies like those expressing our concerns and opinions. who knows, if we stay quiet then we'll surely never get heard :(
