Re: Catching up

Does Phoebe flip when she does that? I can see that gymnastics + martial arts might confuse and fluster her opponents.

Re: Catching up

That sounds like both girls have a good path developing for them. Keep us posted on Phoebe's progress toward Nationals!

As an only child, I never dealt with any kind of sibling rivalry or competition, which I think probably does prepare people better for adult life than my experience. Of course, I ...

Re: Catching up

My husband does have a mustache. Beards without mustaches remind me of the Mennonites or maybe the Amish. It's true that they require more regular cleaning.

Re: Catching up

Sad about the wedding cake. It's shocking to me how many engagements get called off, but when they get called off that close to the ceremony, you figure something dramatic must have happened.

I don't have strong opinions about beards. I may have a slight preference for the clean-shaven look, and ...

Re: Where were you?

HH, since you asked, I randomly looked up something on the order of witnesses who died in the days and months after JFK's assassination. To my surprise, a boatload of names showed up, my uncle's among them.

Re: Catching up

Yeah, I guess someday it will be true, but I think it's a waste of time to fret about it.

I can understand your wife's desire to stay connected to her childhood church, but an hour's drive for a busy family who work weekends sounds impractical. Y'all need to find some place closer to home ...

Re: Catching up

My kids call that practice "Chreaster Christianity." Of course, I'm not aware that any of them went to church this past Sunday. I know the two here didn't because they were both down with a nasty cold. I have it now. Yuck. At least I was able to sing over the weekend.

Re: Where were you?

Oh, that's so frustrating. I've had stuff like that happen to me occasionally, both at this forum and others.

Re: Catching up

Even Jesus said that he didn't know when the end was coming, so I don't expect to know.

I'm surprised to hear that an Episcopal minister has gone so fundamentalist. That is not the usual profile of an Episcopal minister. For most of my life, the problem has been that they don't focus enough on the ...

Re: Where were you?

Actually, I don't, because I've never made it a point to read up on that stuff. I was a child when it all happened, of course. It was only because of the family connection that I remember so much about my uncle. I've always felt that something more was at work than the public ever knew. It made no ...

Re: Weird Easter customs

We've got a fair number of those old epics and have watched both Ten Commandments and Ben Hur recently. Ben Hur is probably my favorite movie, ever, even though I've seen many great ones over my lifetime, and most of my other favorites are nothing like it. I saw it first run in theaters when I was ...

Re: Where were you?

In Jackson, MS, the students were held in school the whole day but weren't told of the assassination until just before release. (There were no tvs in school in the '60s unless something was happening like a presidential inauguratuon or a moon launch, etc, something planned well in advance). However ...

Re: Where were you?

When I ask Lydia now what she remembers about 9/11, she tells me that what she remembers is what happened the next day, when I crossed the street with her to visit our neighbors. Our neighbors directly across the street are Muslims from Jerusalem. I did not know them, but I had heard on Sunday from ...

Re: Where were you?

I didn't even realize I'd joined this forum on an anniversary of 9/11. I'd been reading here for a while and decided to leap in. I guess it was Halloween season.

The actual day? My boys were at school, and my husband, who was between jobs at the time, must have taken them. I was at home with Lydia ...
