Re: The best Christmas episodes and tv specials

Bing Crosby was a great favorite of my mother's. She remembered when he was young and an A-list singer as well as movie star. I think he actually won an Oscar way back when. I knew him mainly from those Christmas specials, when he was older. I liked him, but he didn't mean to me what he'd meant to ...

Re: Catching up

I think it's possible we may be held responsible on Judgment Day for the things we've wasted that could have helped other people.

Re: Catching up

Your philosophy reminds me a lot of Voltaire's at the end of Candide, 'Let everyone cultivate his own garden." It's not a selfish statement, but a recognition that if everybody were to do the best they could to care for their immediate circle, the entire world would be a better place.

It's ...

Re: The best Christmas episodes and tv specials

The tv series Grimm had some Christmas episodes. My husband loves the one from Season 3, entitled Krampus. He laughs at it every time and sometimes references it at other times of the year.

HH, I'm pretty sure Crosny died in the 70s, which I think was before your time. Maybe you saw some of his ...

Re: Christmas Trees - fake or real?

Oh, my! I can see they'd do that in CA, but I think I'd be happier to go artificial in that case.

Re: Catching up

My husband taught at a school like that in Virginia. The first day of hunting season was an unofficial holiday. The school was still in session, but nobody marked the hunters absent.

Re: Christmas Trees - fake or real?

I got some larger LEDs for the yard a year or so back. They look like the old ones you're talking about, but they're not.

Last year I bought something called "scentsicles" for our artificial tree. They do emit fragrance. In fact, you have to be careful.not to overdo it.

Re: The best Christmas episodes and tv specials

I've had trouble a few times lately, too. I'll be typing and posting just fine, then suddenly it will tell me that I'm "forbidden."

Re: Catching up

Congratulations on your super land deal! I don't think I would talk about it with anyone. They say it's a mistake for lottery winners to publicize their good fortune. There are always so many people out there who need money and can tell distressing stories. I know some of them are con artists, but ...

Re: Christmas Trees - fake or real?

Re your real tree: you are going to LOVE the way it smells. That's what I miss most about a real tree. When I had my one preferred fake tree, I used to use an evergreen scented Glade plug-in behind it to create the illusion that the tree had a scent.

Our Kroger is selling table top trees, real ...

Re: The best Christmas episodes and tv specials

Oh, that's a great one! Season 6? I think. Frasier always had such superb holiday episodes. Their Valentine's and Halloween episodes were also brilliant.

I'm a fan of the new All Creatures Great and Small. It's very cozy, so it might or might not be to your taste. But it's well done, and each ...

Re: The best Christmas episodes and tv specials

I'll have to give this some thought. But one thing I do remember from the 60s and 70s is the many Christmas specials we used to see back then. Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Andy Williams used to have them every year. So did Lawrence Welk. The Carpenters did two or three in the 70s. These were all ...

Re: Christmas Trees - fake or real?

My mother told me that her family used to go to the woods to get a tree. They also decorated it with candles when she was a child. She said that when you have a candlelit tree, it gets lit only once. But she said there was nothing quite so magical as a tree lit with candles.

Re: Catching up

I've felt that way about some of my posts, too. But I've also had a hobby for maybe 20 years of writing down everything I can remember of the family stories my mother and others told me. I think the names on a family tree mean a lot more when people know something about the ones who bore those names ...
