bales of straw or hay work nicely, and you can use fabric, halloween table cloths throws, etc to cover them. It can be a bit messy to clean up inside later, but it adds to the fall ambience... if your party is outside, its a win win, especially if you have a bonfire

Instead of having the "whole" party at your house, maybe go in with a couple of friends, do appetizers at one location, then surprise your guests with a scavenger hunt out in public, divide the guests into 3 or 4 teams, (colored stones in a bag pull them out and instant teams-couples can get split ...
